Black History Month 2018 Middlesex County Public Schools

Elementary School Activities Fourth grade students completed research throughout the month of February in preparation for the Famous African Americans Wax Museum. Students in grades K-5, as well as family members and guests, had the opportunity to visit the museum on Friday, February 23rd to learn more about African Americans that have played an influential role in the history of our nation. Throughout all grade levels, students have engaged in research and writing opportunities specific to Famous African Americans as outlined within grade level curriculum. Second grade students’ writing is featured throughout the second grade pod. Third grade students’ writing and projects can be found throughout classrooms. Third grade students had the opportunity to dig deeper and explore the meaning behind monumental quotes by Famous African Americans.

Middle School Activities Students had the opportunity to hear NAACP member, Mr. Lou Belcher’s firsthand experience of integration in public schools. Students were able to ask questions at the end of his talk. Eighth graders selected famous Black Americans they wanted to learn more about and created visual displays to communicate their research and presented their projects to classmates.

Activities at the High School Students created an interactive timeline detailing the important developments in Black History. Government classes spent the month focusing on important Black leaders in history and the origin of Black History Month. Additional work was done to explore the Harlem Renaissance, both from a political and literary perspective, and to engage students in learning about current key Black Americans in politics, athletics, entertainment and other cultural leadership roles.Black history timeline during Lee Anderson’s classes. Michael Pierce’s African American History class organized the Irene Morgan 5K and Fun Run on 2/17/18 at MHS, an event open to the public. World History II classes studied the Tuskegee Airmen, the WWII US Homefront and desegregation of the armed forces and learned about the impact of minority participation in World War Two.
