Making Multiple Signature Books
Book Arts Series
Saturday, April 29th , 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 pm.
This workshop will introduce the novice to 3 multiple signature book structures. Participants will learn the basic form for creating a “2 signature pamphlet sewn” book, a “dos à dos” book, and a “two sewn as one” book Participants will take home their completed book structures and a course workbook.
Introduction to Brush Writing
Saturday May 13th, 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
This workshop will introduce the novice to the basics of writing letters with a chisel edge brush and the pointed brush. Participants will learn the basic strokes and stroke sequence and direction needed to write Trajan's Formal Roman Alphabet and Petrarch with the chisel edged brush. Students will learn the basics of creating Brush Script with the pointed brush. Students will have extensive in class practice with manipulating the brush, forming serifs, strokes, and building finished letters. Instruction will be provided in group and one-on-one. Participants will complete one full alphabet and one broadside made with brush strokes. Participants will take home a chisel-edged brush, a pointed brush, tempera practice paint and a course workbook.
Nancy Trottier is an internationally recognized calligraphy and book arts instructor. Her undergraduate career was spent at St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa, where she studied with the world-renowned Calligrapher and Paleographer, The Reverend Edward Michael Catich, before his death in 1979. Trottier’s graduate work is in the history of art, specifically the history of early French printed books of hours. Her academic work involves codicology for manuscripts and early printed books. She is a former Newberry Library Consortium Fellow, served on the Board of Directors for The Museum of Printing in North Andover, MA (www.museumofprinting.org), and is a member of the CORE faculty for The CATFISH Letter Arts School, a working division of The Art Legacy League in Iowa (www.artlegacyleague.org). Her work is contained in national and international private and public collections.
