Brown Club of Eastern Pennsylvania – Newsletter 2011 – Issue #1 BCEP – Our First Year The Brown Club of Eastern Pennsylvania – it all started with an email last February from our founding co-presidents, Jennifer Ketay ’63 and Sheila O’Connell ‘78, inviting interested alumni to a March organizational meeting. The goals for the first year were simple: to form a core group of interested alums to arrange two or three events a year for Brown alumni in eastern Pennsylvania. There are nearly 250 alumni in our catchment area which goes north to the New York border and south to the Philadelphia metropolitan area, which has its own alumni club. Our eastern boundary is the Delaware River and we extend westwards to include the cities of Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, and Reading. It should be noted that the BCEP does not do fund-raising for the University; nor are there are any dues. The primary intent of the club is to enable alumni in our area to meet with each other and share in the camaraderie of being Brown alums. In looking back, it appears that we somewhat ignored our original goals. Instead of limiting the number of events to only two or three, the club organized six, well-attended events in 2010! The club also launched its own web site – you can always check the BCEP web site for the schedule of events as well as to see photos of past ones. Not too shabby for a group that really wasn’t formed until late in the first quarter of last year. In keeping with our intent to include family events as part of the club’s program, the first BCEP event was a guided walk at the Lehigh Gap Nature Preserve. Perhaps, this first event was influenced by the fact that one of our co-presidents, Jennifer, is a bird-watcher, or “twitcher” as the Brits call people with ornithological passions. Our second event was also family-oriented and was at the Velodrome in Trexlertown where Kate Veronneau ’05 cycles for the Kutztown Cutters. Kate unexpectedly added to the drama by having a spectacular crash late in the evening. Fortunately, Kate wasn’t very seriously injured and although sidelined for a while, she has fully recovered and is back on the track again – at least when there is no snow or ice on it. There is more about Kate and her cycling career elsewhere in the Newsletter. Our other events included two dinners. The first was a “Bruno Dines Out” gathering at the vibrant Portuguese restaurant, Valenca in Easton (see photo), and the second was “Dinner with a Professor,” where Brown’s charming and energetic Professor Evelyn HuDeHart gave an entertaining, informative talk on the Asian influence on Art in the Americas.

In November, a schmooze and networking event was held at the Tap and Table Gastropub in Emmaus. We finished the year with a Holiday Open House, generously hosted by Ken Jones, Jr. ’02 at Mercantile Home, his designer shop and studio in Easton. The Open House was followed by a concert in the Grand Eastonian Suites Hotel next door. So, what’s in store for 2011?

A Look Ahead – BCEP in 2011 Skating – This Saturday in Bethlehem! Our first club event of 2011 is this Saturday, the 5th of February, 1:30 to 3:00 PM at the Steel Ice Center in Bethlehem. Bring your family and friends! In addition to the skating, the club has reserved a gathering room for meeting and mingling, and refreshments are available from the Steel Ice Center's snack bar. Note, due to the forecast for snow on Saturday, a rescheduling to a later date is being considered. Check your email for a possible change notification. While the agenda for the remainder of 2011 is still being finalized, among the events under consideration are another “Bruno Dines Out” and/or “Dinner with a Professor,” one or two schmooze and network gatherings, a cultural event, ideally one with a Brown alum associated with the organization, and one or two more family events, including a revisit to the Velodrome. We hope to hold at least one event in the Wilkes Barre – Scranton area. If you have any suggestions for events, please contact one of our board members – see list at end of the Newsletter.

Join the Fun – Become a Board Member! The club is looking for new board members. Any alumnus/alumna can join. The primary commitments are to provide guidance for the future direction and scope of the club and to contribute to the ideas and planning for future events. Board meetings are relatively brief, about 90 minutes, and held about every two months. While all of the board meetings to date have been in the Lehigh Valley, we hope to add at least one or two new board members from the Scranton – Wilkes Barre area and, in doing so, will plan at least one meeting a year in that area as well. If interested and/or have any questions, contact Sheila O’Connell at 610-974-8527 or at [email protected]. The next board meeting is March 16th. Hope to see you there!

Featured Alum: Kate Veronneau ’05, Athlete & Entrepreneur Extraordinaire! Periodically, we hope to provide club members with information about one of the alumni living in our area. In this issue, Kate Veronneau ’05, BCEP board member, BCEP web-master, and professional cyclist is featured.

Kate grew up in Chatham, NJ and studied Modern Culture and Media at Brown. While there, she also played a little basketball – starting every game as a freshman and was named Ivy League Rookie of the Year! To enrich her life experience further, Kate left Brown for a couple of years and became heavily involved in the Providence arts scene. She lived and worked in downtown Providence and produced fashion events and benefits. Another result of this “Providential” experience was that Kate met her fiancé, Mike Hurley, a RISD grad whom Kate contracted to design a poster for one of her fashion shows. When she returned to Brown, Kate used her experience to set up an Independent Study in Entrepreneurship with Professor Barrett Hazeltine. The final product was a sold-out multimedia fashion show and temporary shop using one of the beautifully renovated buildings in downtown Providence. Most of Kate’s designers were RISD grads. As much as Kate enjoyed her basketball experience, it resulted in several knee surgeries. These operations required her to spend a lot of rehab time on a bike. Since her fiancé, Mike, came from a skateboarding background, cycling became their athletic middle-ground. After graduation, Kate and Mike relocated to Mike’s hometown, Devon, PA, in the summer of ’06. Kate had a corporate job as a web producer and they both continued cycling. Looking for new and exciting regional entertainment, they found themselves at the Valley Preferred Velodrome one night to watch the Friday night racing and were blown away by the Olympic-caliber competition racing around the 333m track at lightning speed. They both signed up for an intro class, and 2 years later, Kate and Mike relocated to Kutztown and Kate was racing on Friday nights. She was introduced to a wonderful coach, former Norwegian Olympian May Britt Hartwell, who helped develop Kate’s natural gifts and craft into becoming a professional racer. Kate races both road and track, though she has found that the longer road races are more suited to her personal strengths. In 2009, Kate raced for the Altarum Institute, a health systems research institute based in Washington DC. Altarum sponsored a professional women’s cycling team to create ambassadors for their major initiative to combat childhood obesity. In addition to racing a full National Race Calendar (NRC) schedule, the team visited inner-city schools and delivered presentations on the importance of healthy eating and exercise. Altarum is also devoted to improving veterans’ healthcare. One day the team also spent time with soldiers from the Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Kate describes her visit as a oncein-a-lifetime, awe-inspiring experience. Unfortunately, the economic crisis has directly affected women’s cycling sponsorships, making it increasingly difficult to secure adequate compensation. In order to simultaneously train and focus on career goals, Kate decided to race independently. In 2010, Kate had her best season with five top ten

National Race Calendar finishes. She and her fiancé, Mike, formed a local team, the Kutztown Cutters –a nod to one of Kate’s favorite films, Breaking Away. Mike flexed his RISD muscles and designed beautiful, Pennsylvania-Dutch-inspired kit (uniforms) for the team. Here, in Kate’s words, are her feelings about her experiences and future goals: My experience as a professional cyclist awakened something deep and defining in me. I truly believe in the power of sport to exhilarate, strengthen, challenge and connect all those who partake in it. This awareness of the impact of athletics on my own life has inspired me to pursue a career in health and fitness. I am now a certified personal trainer whose goals are to help people realize their inner strength and build confidence and vitality through hard work and discipline. I believe in the transformative power of exercise not only to achieve optimal physical results, but also as a proven therapy in combating low self-esteem, depression and stress. I train people out of my house and work as a fitness coach at a private studio in Allentown, PA. I can be contacted at [email protected] for more information. My goal is to have my own large studio that is suited for everyday fitness as well as elite athletic training. I also started a new part-time position January 1st. I am the new Social Media Director at the Valley Preferred Velodrome in Trexlertown. Working directly under local legend and Olympic Gold Medalist, Marty Nothstein, I look forward to using my media degree to help promote the original American sport. If I have my way, everyone will know that the original Madison Square Garden was originally a velodrome!

BASC Update Brown Alumni Schools Committee – Brown received 2,643 early decision applicants for the class of 2015 (down slightly from last year’s ~2,800); our area provided 6 applicants: 3 were deferred and 3 were denied. Overall applications from our area are up 20% this year - for a total of 83 at last count. This means we are ever more reliant on our volunteer interviewers to contact these promising young students. Given the increase in numbers, it is acceptable to complete interviews over the phone or via the Internet (i.e., using Skype) if a personal meeting is not feasible. If you would like to help interview prospective students please update your eBASC ‘volunteer status’ on the Brown alumni web site to ‘active’ and contact me if you have any questions. Interviewing is a nice way to help Brown and stay in touch with the current high school senior class. The application deadline was January 1 and the deadline for Regular Decision interviews is February 15! Paul B. Oberbeck ‘84 Regional BASC Liaison
