After School Korfball Clubs starting on Oct 23

We’re all set to start up two new after-schools clubs beginning on October 23… The first one will be at Birkhill Primary, and is being hosted by the Angus Active Schools Coordinator, Jo Whaite. This one will run from 3:30 to 4:30pm. The second one is a bit later on, from 6:00 to 7:30pm, and will be hosted by Mark Brash, who is the ASC for the Craigowl cluster in Dundee. These later sessions will be aimed at secondary school kids, but will be held in the main sports hall at Craigowl Primary. Anyone wanting any more details for either club should contact Nigel Cooper, DKC’s Youth Development Officer, on 07817 640432.

And don’t forget that our regular youth section is still running every Thursday evening at the Ardler Complex, from 5:30-6:30pm. Everyone is welcome here, and everyone’s first session is completely free of charge. Saturday 29 September 2012 the International Korfball Federation (IKF) announced a modern, brand new logo. This represents our ambition as a modern, international sport. We are committed to spreading our mixed gender sport even further over the world. At the moment the IKF has 59 member countries spread over Africa, Asia, Americas, Europe and Oceania. We are looking for a controlled further growth. The IKF strives to have 65 members by 2015. Further ambitions are to create greater awareness and become a media oriented sport. The new logo is in a way a translation of the actual IKF strategy; multi color, mixed gender, modern and challenging.

Edinburgh News

EUKC Freshers Fun The last two weeks have seen EUKC hitting the ground running for this year’s Korfball season and trying to recruit as many new members as we can. We had two days and the Fresher’s Fair handing out flyers and using the phrase “It’s kind of like a basketball, netball type sport but with mixed teams” more times than we could count! After managing to get a good few people interested and handing out lots more flyers out to freshers too scared to say no, we showed them what Korfball was all about. Our first taster session was a 2 hour session at the University’s Sunday of Sport demonstrating the basic rules and skills of the game and allowing people to try it out. This was a great opportunity for newbies to come and have a go and for the oldies to dust of the cobwebs. We had a fantastic turnout to both this and the following two beginners training sessions, making an excellent start to what will hopefully be another excellent year!

Training sessions

The club has several training sessions for all abilities. We currently train on Monday from 18:00 - 19:00 for youth (12-16 years), 18:30 20:00 for students and adults in St Pauls Academy, and Thursday from 17:30 - 18:30 for youngsters (8-12 years old), 18:30 - 20:00 for adults at the Ardler complex. Anyone that has never been to one of our training sessions is made welcome and they are then welcome to join the first training for free. We hope that they have fun and have a decent work-out while learning about this sport. All you need for the training is a shirt and trousers where you can move freely in, and some

We also offer a money-saving bulk-buy rate of £20 for 6 sessions* (£8 for for 6 kid’s sessions*), payable either as cash-up-front or by standing order (in advance; once again, concessions can apply). The bulk-buy offers each cover 6 consecutive weeks worth of training, which works out as £2.22 per hour for adults, and £1.33 per hour for kids. Club Membership: anyone who attends more than 3 sessions in a given year is considered to be a fully paid-up member of the club. Fully paid up club members are entitled to vote at the AGM, and to play in official matches for the club.

SKA & DKC results

Well, the Scottish competition has started and we were of with a good start, after the first game we were top of the league. Unfortunately this didn't last very long, and after the game against St. Andrews we were no longer. This was to be expected, but this was a great start. There where goals scored by Nigel and Caroline in the first match, and by Emily and Shane in the second. The next games are in Edinburgh away, hope we can get some more goals on the score board.

Match report

Dundee – Glasgow final score 2 – 12

On Saturday 27th of Oct. Dundee played in the Douglas sport centre against Glasgow. A team that has recently gained a valuable player from the former St. Andrews 1 team after he graduated there. We already new that this was going to be a hard game, not made easier with the size of some of their players. I know that I am not that tall, but it is always harder to play against a player that is 1-2 foot taller. It means that you have less chance picking the ball up after a shot, even Nigel was having problems. We paired up our players to get the best advantage of our strengths, and the game commenced. Glasgow have some strong women that have a solid medium to long distance shot and they profited from that at several occasions, but saying that they missed more than they scored. It took Dundee a while before we could join them on the score board. Talking about a score board, from this week we have a score board for the home and away team. Nigel has been busy and printed number cards in two colours and stored them in two ring binders. We can now display the score during the game, next an timer? Anyway, Nigel managed to put the first point on the score board. At least the dreaded zero was gone. After the first half was played, some changes where made in the team. Paul was one of the changes and after about 5 min. play he received the ball, took a bit distance and took a shot, a perfect combination that resulted in a goal. His first game point and it was a well performed routine. Unfortunately this was as far as we could go and the final score was 12 – 2 to Glasgow.

“passing and moving”. Put very simply, korfball is brilliant. :) It is also really easy to learn how to play, and beginners are always welcome. Want to know anything else? Post a reply on our webite, use the contacts page, or just ask us at one of our regular training sessions.

St. Andrews 2 – Dundee final score 2 - 3

The game against St. Andrews was the last game played against a fairly new team from St. Andrews. Dundee had more experience and was ready to play some korfball. St. Andrews was tight in their defence, and has the advantage of age, they have more energy than most of us. This meant that they where moving around a lot, and not always where you thought they should be. This created some chances and they scored the first goal. This was put straight by Nicky, who (as Paul) scored her first game point this year. Well done, change of side. There where plenty of falling over, losing glasses etc. before there was another goal for St. Andrews. Nigel managed later on to give us back the equalizer but we could not get the better (in points) of St. Andrews. For their lack of experience they did a good job of stopping us scoring. (This is sadly our downfall, and we are training hard to rectify this) After Erwin missed a penalty, later on he managed to score the winning goal with a distance shot. At the final whistle the score was a meagre 3-2.

Four - on - zero

The four - on - zero play means that you play all four against zero under the post. This means basically that the ball is played around using all four players without anyone being placed under the post in the position of a 'feed' or 'collect'. To be able to play the ball around without it being caught by the defending team you have to make sure that you are placing yourself outside the reach of the defender. You can achieve this by running towards the post and 'veering' out to distance yourself from the defender. Normally you 'veer' towards the player with the ball, thereby creating space between yourself and your defender. The reason that you are getting space is that the defender is trying to stay between you and the post. By 'veering' out you move in the opposite direction as the defender hence making some space. By moving in the direction of the ball you get your defender behind you giving you the opportunity to get the ball direct played at you.

As you can see on the images the player moves towards the post and comes towards the ball at an angle (veer) to create space. After player 2 has got the ball, player 3 does the same type of move followed by player 3 and 4. This can go on for a while and can change direction at any point. You don't have to keep playing clock wise or anti-clock wise. The 'Veer' can be used at any time to create space and an opportunity to receive the ball. The 4-onzero can be changed to 3-on-1 or 2-on-2 when a player moves to the post and becomes a 'collect' or a 'feed', when both positions are taken a 2-on-2 is achieved. On the images player 3 has become a 'feed' and is getting the ball from player 1 (or 4). Player 2 moves to 'collect' the ball when the players misses. Player 1 and 4 try to get a running in shot or a long distance shot when they get a chance. Playing a 4-on-zero can create chances by moving the ball around and making sure that the opponent has to keep following you at all time. This will prevent them from guessing your next move, as long as you mix up the direction and distance from the post. When a player is getting the freedom the players around him or her have to be ready to move in for the collect, or for a feed. Hopefully this gives you an understanding of some of the terms used and what it means as well as the purpose of these tactics. Issue 1
