Guidelines and Application Form Bryng Bryngelson Research Funding Awards Overview: Dr. Bryng Bryngelson (1892-1979) was a pioneer in communication sciences and disorders, especially in the area of stuttering, and he founded the speech clinic at the University of Minnesota in 1927. The Bryngelson Fund was established in honor of his many achievements, and is maintained only through individual donations. The Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences is pleased to announce that Ph.D. students are eligible for up to $400 in expenses from the Bryngelson Research Fund to support research-related activities during the academic year. Terms of Award: Awards will be made in an amount up to $400. Students accepting Bryngelson funds must present at the Ph.D. Proseminar by the end of the semester following the specified research/travel. Funds will be distributed at the time of the award. Only expenses that actually will be incurred are covered -- all receipts for expenditures must be submitted to the Graduate Student Personnel Coordinator. Number of Awards: All Ph.D. students may apply more than one time during the academic year; however, the total amount requested during the year should not exceed $400. Eligibility: Active Ph.D. students in the Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences Examples of Allowable Expenses: Airfare and hotel expenses related to presenting at a conference, subject payments, etc. Review Process: The Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) will review applications. Applications will be accepted throughout the academic year. The application should be discussed with the student’s academic advisor and, where relevant, with the faculty member with whom the student is completing the research project prior to sending the application. Selection Criteria: Applications will be reviewed based on the following criteria:
The student is an author on a paper (poster, panel, etc.) accepted for presentation at a conference; The student requires funding for a research project and has an approved IRB;
If requests exceed Bryngelson resources, priority will be given to students without other sources of funding (other than TA/RA positions).
Applications for other types of expenses (e.g., educational/training visits) will be reviewed and approved at the discretion of the department chair/DGS.
