Bienvenidos a BSMS SIP by Sr. McMaine
We are very excited about starting the new year with both new and returning Bryan Station Middle School Spanish Immersion students. Our goal is to provide an integrated multicultural learning environment that fosters Spanish language proficiency through content instruction.
Research Researchers Wayne Thomas and Virginia Collier have demonstrated that students in Dual Language programs, like BSMS SIP, have higher engagement, score higher on tests, have higher self-esteem, among other benefits. Additionally, they have shown that learning in two languages develops creativity and problem-solving skills.
Keeping Current We look forward to an amazing school year, and it is important for families to travel together on this language learning journey. To facilitate communication and to keep families up-to-date with what is happening in the Bryan Station Middle School Spanish Immersion Program, we will be sending this weekly newsletter.
Resources Throughout the year, we will be sharing additional resources for Spanish language learning for families and students. The following is a link provided by Fayette County Public Schools to make families aware of some language learning opportunities available both in the community and on the internet: http://tinyurl.com/langresources.
Learning and Teaching
Bryan Station Middle School Spanish Immersion teachers met over the summer to discuss multiple ways of facilitating instruction with technology. Sr. Castillo leads a session on using SMART amp in the classroom.
Rubrics We will be sharing new Oral Proficiency Assessment rubrics with students on Thursday and Friday. The rubrics are aligned with national and state guidelines and standards, as well as with FCPS District Proficiency goals. You may review them at https://tinyurl.com/bsmsopa.
