Message RI President Dear Fellow Rotarians, There was once a strong young man who was offered a job as a woodcutter. He set about his task with energy: The first week, he turned 18 trees into firewood. The second week, he worked just as hard, but was surprised to find he had chopped only 11 trees. The third week, despite working nonstop from morning till night, the number was six, and he went despairingly to the foreman to offer his resignation. "I am losing my strength. I can no longer cut as many trees as I once could." The foreman looked at the young man, who seemed to him in fine health. "Have you thought of sharpening your ax?" he asked. "Sharpen my ax? Who has time to sharpen an ax?" the young man asked indignantly. "I have been too busy chopping wood!" When we aren't making the kind of progress we feel we should be making, the natural response is to redouble our efforts. Sometimes, though, the better response is not to work harder, but to work smarter. Look at your tools. Analyze your processes. Are you directing your resources in the most effective ways? Or are you pouring all your strength into chopping wood with a dull ax? For the last 20 years, we have relentlessly beaten the drum of membership in Rotary. We set goals and launch campaigns, all focused on bringing in more and more members. And yet, our overall numbers remain the same. It is time to sharpen our tools. Instead of focusing on the question, "How can we bring more members into Rotary?" we should be asking ourselves, "How can we add more value to

Rotary membership, so that more will join and fewer will leave?" One way we are doing that is with the new Rotary Global Rewards program, which launched in July. This innovative program allows Rotarians to connect with, and receive discounts and concessions from, businesses and service providers around the world. Individual Rotarians may submit their own business to be included alongside those with which Rotary has already negotiated relationships; the most appropriate offers will be added to the listings. We have also created the option of allowing businesses to return a percentage of their profit on each transaction to our Rotary Foundation, and several companies have already been locked into this part of the scheme. Each month we will update the list with additional offers that we may receive. I urge all of you to try it out by signing up on My Rotary at Rotary.org now. The more Rotarians participate, the stronger, and more beneficial, the program will be. Much more than another loyalty program, Rotary Global Rewards is a new way to benefit from being a Rotarian, and being part of the Rotary network. It is another way to combine business and service. And it is yet another way to add value to Rotary membership. We cannot forget that our potential members will be asking themselves, "What's in it for me?" We need to demonstrate the value of Rotary by showing that becoming a Rotarian will enrich their lives, as it has ours. Rotary International President Rtn. Ravindran

Message President In the month of August, we have started with our most successful project “Oral Hygiene Celebrations” which won the coveted ISP Trophy again and consecutively all the years since its institution. Membership development and extension are essential to achieving Rotary's goals of providing community and international service. We have also worked out effectively to achieve our required goal in the Membership Development by inducting 4 new members with diversified classification. Another batch of trainees of “Rotary Karmakshethra – Tailoring Training for economically backward and unemployed women - program successfully completed and the new batches have begun their training classes. Our innovative project “Threatened Tree Conservation Gardens” to save endemic threatened and medicinal trees was much appreciated. We have planted 1111 seedlings of 111 species to mark 111 years of Rotary movement, under the guidance of Rtn. Prof. Dr. Ratheesh Narayanan.

In the Rotary Areas of Focus, we were able to accomplish the Youth Service by gifting the beds to the needy youths at Payyanur Sreenarayanana Vidyalayam, Maternal Health and Child Care by establishing the Model Breast Feeding Centre at Payyanur Govt. Taluk Hospital and taking Care of Girl Children by gifting the newspapers at the Payyanur Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School. In the Community Service area, we were able to distribute free Onam Kits and Ona Kodi to 200 selected poor people in the Payyanur Municipal area. We have also organized a family treat by colourful cultural feast for Onagosham. It is the meticulous planning and combined unified efforts which made the grand success of the projects and programs. I take this opportunity to thank and congratulate my fellow Rotarians, the real doers and Be the Gift to the World. Rtn. Er. C.R NAMBIAR

T-E-A-C-H Rotary International's successful "End Polio" program that resulted in eradication of polio, totally from India and from nearly 99% of the world, has motivated the Rotarians in South Asia to adopt "Rotary's Total Literacy Mission". In India, the Rotary India Literacy Mission wishes to achieve the literacy goals through its T-E-A-C-H program : T - Teacher Support E - E-learning A - Adult Literacy C - Child Development H - Happy Schools Thus, the T-E-A-C-H "program" includes five "projects", each with specific focus but inter-linked with the others in objective and content so as to contribute to the program goal of Total Literacy accompanied with improvement in learning outcome of primary education and spread of adult literacy in various parts of the country. Understanding the enormity of the task, we have decided to adopt, in implementing T-E-A-C-H, a strategy of meaningful cooperation with all actors in the field, by forging strong partnerships with the government, corporate, national/state-specific nongovernmental organizations as well as international organizations working in various segments of this country-wide endeavor. The term "program" is used only for T-E-A-C-H. This includes five "projects", namely, "T", "E", "A", "C" and "H". Each of these 5 projects has one or more "schemes". Lastly, a scheme has several "activities". Thus, the terminological hierarchy is : PROGRAM >> PROJECT >> SCHEME >> ACTIVITY. T - Teacher Support This project aims to assist the

central and state governments' on-going efforts, in accordance with the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, to improve the professional abilities and performance of teachers in selected primary schools through better training and use of modern teaching aids so as to enhance the learning outcomes of students. E - E-learning This project aim is to improve the quality of elementary education through expanded availability and extensive use of high quality local language and curriculum-based e-learning modules and thus enhance knowledge absorption - retention and critical thinking abilities of children in the selected schools. A - Adult LiteracyThis project seeks to educate adult non-literates in urban and rural areas, provide opportunities for continuing education to such neoliterates and impart skill development training to adult neo-literates leveraging available government assistance. C - Child Development This project aims to promote education of out-of-school children, including those who are either differently-abled or otherwise at risk, by facilitating their access to mainstream Statefunded primary/elementary schools so that they are enabled to complete studies up to class VIII. H - Happy Schools This project (consisting of one scheme) aims to select elementary schools and provide/upgrade infrastructural and/or co-scholastic facilities there to make them secure, attractive and happy learning-teaching places for students and teachers. (Courtesy : www.rotary.org)

What is Asha Kiran? 'Asha Kiran... a ray of hope' campaign is a Rotary initiative to send all out-of-school children in the age group of 6 to 14 years, including children with special needs and children at risk, back to school by facilitating their access to mainstream state-funded primary/elementary schools, thereby enabling them to complete their studies. Contribute Rs 2,100 and send a Child back to school

LITERACY Rtn. Dr. Ratheesh Narayanan (Service Chair, Literacy & Education) Literacy is traditionally understood as the ability to read and write. The term's meaning has been expanded to include the ability to use language, numbers, images and other means to understand and use the dominant symbol systems of a culture. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) defines literacy as the "ability to identify, understand, interpret, create, communicate and compute, using printed and written materials associated with varying contexts. According to UNESCO, in the world today there are about 1 billion non-literate adults. Women make up two thirds of all non literates and 98 percent of all non literates live in developing countries. As per Population Census of India 2011, the Literacy rate of India has shown as improvement of almost 9 percent. It has gone up to 74.04% in 2011 from 65.38% in 2001, thus showing an increase of 9 percent in the last 10 years. It consists of male literacy rate 82.14% and female literacy rate is 65.46%. Kerala with 93.9% literacy rate is the top state in India. Lakshadweep and

OBITUARY

Mizoram are at second and third position with 92.3% and 91.06% literacy rate respectively. Bihar with 63.08% literacy rate is the last in terms of literacy rate in India. Literacy is a fundamental human right and the foundation for lifelong learning. It is fully essential to social and human development in its ability to transform lives. For individuals, families, and societies alike, it is an instrument of empowerment to improve one's health, one's income, and one's relationship with the world. Literacy and education are termed as same thing but the literacy has got indirect relation with education. Literacy is about acquiring the skills and learning, while education is about applying these skills and learning for benefit of other people, society or country. Literacy mainly revolves around acquiring the ability to read and write whereas education is about overall development of a person making it a complete human who not only read or write but also has the ability to think in broader terms and analysis the things rationally.

Editor's Voice Within a blinking of an eyelid two months have elapsed in this rotary year and it is a matter of great satisfaction that we could bring out the first two issues in time and in a great manner. However a small delay in this month is regretted. The month of September is designated as ”Basic education and Literacy month”. We need to acquire a deeper understanding of what is basic in education and what constitutes literacy in the real sense of the term. This

issue of “Parrolines”, highlights about this and throws light on how to promote basic education and literacy. Let us therefore proceed towards our goal and increase our horizon of knowledge and be a gift to the world. Rtn. Savitha. N. Shenoy
