During the 2016-2017 school year, Holly Grove Middle School will begin permitting studentowned digital devices to be used in our classrooms as part of Wake County Public School’s pilot BYOD (Bring-Your-Own-Device) program. We believe harnessing the power of digital tools and resources can be a powerful factor in helping a student find success. Students are not required to take part in this program and will still have access to the school’s equipment. The purpose of this document is to inform parents, guardians, and students of the rules governing the use of personally owned computing/network devices while on or near school property, in school vehicles, and at school-sponsored activities, as well as the district’s technology resources via remote access. Holly Grove Middle School recognizes that new technologies can complement and improve upon the instructional process. To encourage these benefits, Holly Grove Middle School is allowing you the opportunity to bring your own device (BYOD). HGMS Vision Holly Grove Middle School believes BYOD should be used to support our school’s vision of empowering students to collaboratively explore, problem solve, create, and lead in today's ever-changing society. HGMS Overview Holly Grove Middle School defines “devices” as privately owned wireless and portable electronic devices that can be used for wireless Internet access, word processing, image/video capturing, sound recording, and information transmitting. Devices may include: cellular Smart phones, laptop computers, and tablets. Note that devices primarily designed for video game usage are not permitted. Students unable to bring their own device to school will be provided access to resources available at Holly Grove Middle School. Students that did not return a signed Acceptable Use Policy form indicating acceptance will not be permitted to take part in the BYOD program. Security and Damages Holly Grove Middle School principals, teachers, and/or staff are not liable for any device that is stolen or damaged. Responsibility to keep the device secure rests with the individual owner. We recommend using protective cases for easy identification, differentiation, and protection of personal devices. Participation in the BYOD program requires parents and students to review, initial each expectation, sign, and return the BYOD contract found on the next page.
