THE CAASPP UMBRELLA WHAT IS CAASPP? The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress, CAASPP, replaced the STAR Program. CAASPP aims “to assist teachers, administrators, students, and parents by promoting highquality teaching and learning through the use of a variety of assessment approaches and item types.” The 2014 - 15 CAASPP comprises the following assessments:
SMARTER BALANCED ENGLISH-LANGUAGE ARTS/LITERACY & MATHEMATICS
All students in grades 3 through 8 and 11 will participate in the 2015 Smarter Balanced tests, which include both Englishlanguage arts/literacy and mathematics.
California Alternate Assessments (CAA) The CAA for English-language arts and mathematics tests are individually administered to students in grades 3 through 8 and 11 who have significant cogntive disabilities. ADAPTATIONS FOR SPECIAL POPULATIONS Standards-based Tests in Spanish (STS) These optional, multiple-choice tests allow Spanishspeaking English learners in grades 2 through 11 to demonstrate their knowledge of the content standards by taking a reading/language arts assessment in their primary language.
SCIENCE ASSESSMENTS
California Modified Assessments (CMA)
Students in grades 5, 8, and 10 will take the California Standards Tests (CSTs) in Science.
Students in grades 5, 8, and 10 who have an individualed education program (IEP) will be administered the CMA for Science tests.
Items on these tests are developed by California educators and test developers and written specifically to assess students’ achievement of California’s academic content standards in science.
ADAPTATIONS FOR SPECIAL POPULATIONS California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA) Students in grades 5, 8, and 10 who have significant cognitive disabilities and who are unable to take the CSTs or CMA with accommodations will take the CAPA for Science tests.
