Chan Wui & Yunyin Rising Star Workshop for Early Career Professionals The Analytical Relationship Between Mobility and Communications July 2016 Schedule • April 2015 – Announcement of the workshop theme, application requirements, and selection criteria. • November 2, 2015, 5 p.m., U.S. Eastern Time – Deadline for applications to participate in the workshop. • December 2016 – Selection of workshop fellows and senior fellows; confirmation of commitments to participate. • 2016 TRB Annual Meeting – Announcement of workshop participants. • April 2016 – Deadline for draft papers by fellows and senior fellows; all participants work with TRB staff to finalize the workshop agenda. • July 2016 – Workshop takes place on a seven-day transatlantic cruise. • September 2016 – Determination of final details for TRB Annual Meeting session or workshop. • October 2016 – Deadline for final papers by participants. • Winter 2016–2017 – Publication of a special volume of the TRR; a special session at the TRB Annual Meeting in January 2017 presents the workshop findings.
Eligibility Current or aspiring academics employed by, or recently retired from, universities or research-related institutions from across the world are eligible. The workshop focuses on the nexus of mobility and communications. Postdoctoral researchers, tenure-track faculty, and research fellows with a demonstrated history of working in this research area are encouraged to apply. • Fellow – Up to eight fellows will be chosen from applicants in the early stages of their careers, with 1 to 3 years of postdoctoral experience. Fellows should intend to pursue academic careers. • Senior fellow – Up to four senior fellows will be chosen from applicants with more than 30 years of academic experience, including extensive research in the workshop topic. In addition, applicants must have experience and a track record in mentoring. Application Process All fellow and senior fellow applicants must provide the following: • Contact information; • A cover letter describing their interest in the workshop, including what they expect to contribute to the workshop, what they hope to learn technically and for building their careers, and a brief description of their interest in the technical topic; and • A curriculum vitae (CV) of not more than 10 pages.
In addition, applicants for fellows must provide the following: • Letters of support from their current university or institution; • Letters of recommendation from two academic advisers; and • A statement of interest, not longer than 5 pages, including related research; career goals and plans; an abbreviated research plan; expectations about the workshop’s effects on their research and their career paths; and plans to share the workshop lessons with their community. Applicants for senior fellows must provide the following additional items: • Letters of recommendation from two mentees; and • A statement of interest, not longer than 5 pages, including relevant research; research perspectives applicable to the workshop; a description of their mentoring philosophy; examples of mentoring activities; and thoughts on career development strategies and on the challenges faced by those entering this academic field. Selection Process The Selection Committee, drawn from members of the TRB Travel Analysis Section, will choose outstanding professionals to participate in the workshop. The Selection Committee’s decisions are final. The goal is to identify fellows and senior fellows with successful and measurable track records in completing research; with demonstrated innovative approaches to the technical topic; and with commitments to giving back to their communities. Senior fellows are expected to present demonstrated mentoring and career-planning credentials.
The Selection Committee will evaluate the nominations in accordance with the following criteria: General • Participant diversity—including geographic, cultural, racial, gender, and other factors that will enrich the workshop; • Point-of-view diversity—including perspectives on the workshop topic and future research focus; and • Creative and innovative approach—for fellows, evidence of innovation in research, and for senior fellows, evidence of innovation in research and in career development. Research • Research track record; and • Focus and plans for future research, including realistic approaches, creativity, and clarity of objectives. Community Benefits • The likelihood that the workshop experience will be applied to invest in others in the profession; • History of engagement in community through mentoring, volunteering, and the like; • Plans to use knowledge gained in the workshop to benefit the community; and • Research that can support policy decisions and lead to a better foundation for the beneficial dissemination of the findings.
