But that does not mean they don’t require proper maintenance. Cargo Containers Corrode Too A cargo container is usually made of strong Corten which is slower to corrode than most types of steel. However, pooled water can, over time, weaken the area with corrosion especially when the paint coating is scratched or damaged. Rust then sets in and eats away at the steel which can spread to other sections and weaken the unit. Water usually pools where there are dents on the roof, which then collects rainwater. To prevent this, make sure that the roof is given a thorough inspection and that all dents, holes, tears are immediately repaired. Door Repair The locks and hinges on the door of the cargo unit is also vulnerable to wear and tear, especially with repeated use. To keep this part of the unit working well, keep it clean of dirt and grime. Rust can also seep into the far corners of the hinges, which will make it difficult to find and access. Regularly lubricate the hinge or lock to keep them in good working order. Sometimes, the steel locks may also get damaged with bumps and dents, making them difficult to lock properly. Remember that cargo containers are meant to be closed for reasons of security, which is why you need to properly maintain the hinges and locking mechanisms. Don’t hesitate to get them replaced at the soonest possible instance if you see that it’s already broken and compromised. Set on Level Ground Check that containers are set on level ground. Keeping it level helps prevent water accumulation, and also protects the underside of the unit from corrosion. Check for Modifications In case you’re getting a used container, have your surveyor confirm if there have been any modifications done on the unit. Identify the parts that have been modified and see if there are any significant effects or consequences to its structural integrity. The steel joints in particular are very critical features of the containers. Look out for signs of rust. The sooner you find these problems, the sooner you can get it fixed, or decide if you’re better off getting another unit instead.
