ountries across Europe are decreasing their aid budgets to divert the spending on settling refugees in their own countries.
This trend could significantly increase suffering in the world, because housing refugees in rich countries is much more expensive than helping people in poor countries. Yet it is going largely unnoticed.
under Official Development Assistance (ODA) for their first year in a country.1 The graph above shows how this has combined with the refugee crisis to lead to countries drastically reducing funds they are spending on overseas aid, a change which UN SecretaryGeneral Ban Ki-Moon warned against.2
Costs per refugee vary widely depending on host country, but is on the order of US$10,000 per year.3 This compares to an estimated $37 for an additional year of education when An OECD directive allows providing iron fortification to funding a refugee’s basic needs pre-schoolers in India.4 in a host country to count
Coverage of this damaging trend has been piecemeal at best.5 It would be worthwhile to bring more attention to this issue. Writing articles in mainstream media outlets could highlight that this is a trend,
rather than isolated cases. It might also be useful to support the ONE’s campaign for the needs of refugees to be met without doing so at the expense of the world’s poorest.6
