Project Description The main project goal: to reduce the quantities of POPs through sustainable management of solid, municipal and agricultural plastic waste. The main project activities: • Strengthening the capacities of associations, local communities and schools to implement the project, conduct action and plan green business. • Educating young people about the harmfulness of waste plastics, foil and POPs and how it effects the health of humans, animals and soil. • Educating the population on primary selection and collection of PET bottles in households, schools and agriculture. • Establishing a functional system for selecting, collecting, transport, processing and sale of plastic waste. Project Achievements • Creation of a network of PET waste collection points in 8 primary and secondary schools in the municipalities of Gevgelija and Bogdanci. Through collaboration with both municipal communal companies, a functional system of selection, collection, transport and sale of plastic waste was established. 630 kg of waste plastic bottles collected instead of releasing dioxins and furans. • Lectures for students in primary and secondary schools about the harmfulness of plastic waste and the possibilities of reusing and recycling. 3,648 students, 348 teachers and other school staff participated in the organized lectures. Established cooperation with Eco school teams, as well as Councils of parents who have supported the project activities. • Organized two educational and promotional public events in Bogdanci, Gevgelija, with the participation of primary and secondary school students/pupils who made sculptures from plastic bottles and exhibited them in the city parks. The events were accompanied by musical, drama and recitals performances by the students. • Developed, printed and distributed educational and promotional materials (5000 leaflets and 60 posters) through which the local population was informed about the importance of recycling plastics and consequences on environment from littering plastic waste. • Capacity building with training workshop for project development, and exchange of positive experiences of the project. Organized 10 local round table meetings and presented the project activities. The debate highlighted the measures and actions to be taken to reduce the harmful impact of plastic waste in the environment and the effects on human health. • Informed citizens on the harmfulness of dioxins and furans through local television, radio and newspaper. Follow up The grantee has plans to continue the project activities for the next school years, by organizing meetings with eco-teams and school principles. Further cooperation with the municipalities and communal companies are also planned in order to expand project activities and establish new ones that are of interest to the local communities.
