Target Reading Skill: Clarifying Meaning Paraphrase To paraphrase means to put something into your own words. After you read the material under one heading in a section, stop reading. Take a moment to paraphrase what you have just read. Putting what you have read into your own words is a very useful reading tool. It will help you clarify meaning. It will show you whether or not you understood what you read. Paraphrasing will also help you remember what you have read. Paraphrasing does not mean writing a summary. It means saying or writing the information in your own words. If you cannot put what you have just read into your own words, you need to stop and reread the material. Try again to put it into your own words. Read the paragraph below: Scientists believe that over 200 million years ago, dinosaurs easily walked from Africa to South America. This is because Africa and South America were connected. About 190 million years ago, forces within our planet caused South America and Africa to move apart.
A sample paraphrase for this paragraph might be: Scientists think dinosaurs moved from Africa to South America 200 million years ago when the two continents were connected. Then, 190 million years ago South America and Africa were forced apart. Directions: Choose a section of your text. Then complete the activities below. 1. Write each of the Reading Checks that appear in the section on the lines below. Next to each Reading Check question write a question that paraphrases the Reading Check. ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ 2. Choose two parts of this section that are of interest to you. In thirty words or less, paraphrase these two parts on the back of this page. When you have finished your paraphrases, read them over and use them to help you better understand the text.
