VABANC & KGALC JOINT COMMUNITY LAW CLINIC San Jose Tully Library, 880 Tully Road, San Jose, CA 95111 6:00 pm, Third Tuesdays of Each Month CLINIC VOLUNTEERS Please sign up each month for Phone duty or Clinic duty on the Volunteer Spreadsheet. PHONE DUTY Volunteers will be sent VM access code & spreadsheet for confidentiality. There are two voicemails that need to be checked: (408) 512-3818 and (408) 288-7030 (432 for Vietnamese line). Voicemails: Volunteers check the VABANC phone line and schedule appointments as needed. The volunteer should confirm the appointment with the clients at least one week before the clinic. Phone Log: On the shared Client Message Log Google Docs, record each voicemail with the callers (1) name, (2) phone number and (3) message. Scheduling Appointments: Identify yourself as a volunteer (law student or attorney) and ask them for a brief overview of their problem. Inform the caller that you cannot give them advice during this phone call. They should be scheduled to attend the next legal clinic on the 3rd Tuesday of the month. Please check in with the volunteers to see if someone will be available to address the legal issue affecting the clients. Clinic information: 6:00 p.m. – Check-in Time San Jose Tully Library, Community Center, 880 Tully Road, SJ Remind clients to bring copies of important documents related to their case. CLINIC DUTIES o Set up clipboards & pens with Clinic Sign-Up form o Print Appointment Log (second page of Phone Log) for the evening’s clinic o Print Volunteer Sign-up for the evening clinic Client Check-in: 1. Clients should fill out the Intake Evaluation Form. Volunteers should check that all fields have been filled out. 2. Review the Volunteer Sign-Up list for the evening and match clients with the attorney that is best suited to advise the client. Clinic Interviews - Attorneys & Law Students will be assigned one client at a time - All law students volunteers should have first priority to sit in on meetings once the clinic begins. - Please check conflict of interests and confidentiality before beginning interviews. - Friends/family/spouses present may be asked to wait outside for the interview. - Attorney and Law Students should introduce themselves to the clients and explain the confidential nature of the interviews and the role of the clinic. - The clinic cannot represent the client in the matter. If needed, the client will be given an attorney referral list and/or additional resource materials. Client Survey: At the end of each interview, please remind the client to fill out the anonymous survey.
