1.

Max.Marks:70 Answer any Five questions All questions carry equal marks. --Discuss the relative merits and demerits of AC and DC transmission from the economical, technical and reliability aspects.

.in

Time: 3hours

Develop an equivalent circuit of a converter working as rectifier with delay angle ‘α’ and overlap angle ‘µ’ and hence show that the equivalent resistance of the 3L converter is where ‘ω ‘ is the angular frequency and ‘ L ’ is the series  inductance of the converter transformer.

4.

Discuss the need for HVDC system control and explain the necessity of constant current and constant voltage control at converter station.

5.

Explain in detail about equidistant pulse control and individual phase control schemes for firing angle control employed in a converter.

6.a) b)

Explain the necessity of smoothing reactor in a dc line. Why commutation failure occurs in HVDC converter and explain the phenomenon.

7.

Why filters are necessary at HVDC converter station and discuss the design of some of the filters.

8.
