Max.Marks:70 Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks --Two vertical rods one of steel and the other of copper are each rigidly fixed at the top and are 500mm apart. Diameter and length of each rod are 20mm and 4m respectively. A cross bar fixed to the rods at the lower ends carries a load of 5000 N such that the cross bar remains horizontal even after loading. Find the tension in the each rod and the position of the load on the bar. Take Es = 2x105N/mm2 and Ec = 1x105N/mm2.

The cross section of a simple supported beam of span 6m and carrying a central point load of 60kN is that of a T-section which has a flange of 150mm x 15mm and a centrally placed web of 10mm x 100mm. Draw the shear stress distribution across the depth of the cross section where shear force is maximum. Indicate all the important values.
5.
For the beam shown in the figure determine the slope at F and deflection at B and mid point of beam.
6.
A cylindrical shell of inner radius 60mm and outer radius 100mm is subjected to an internal fluid pressure of 64N/mm2. Draw the variation of hoop stress and radial stress along the thickness of cylinder.
7.
A rectangular block of material is subjected to a tensile stress of 100 N/mm2 on one plane and tensile stress of 50N/mm2 on a plane at right angles together with shear stress of 60N/mm2 on the same plane. Find (i) Direction of the principle planes; (ii) the magnitude of the principle stresses and (iii) The magnitude of the greatest shear stress.
8.
A hollow shaft with diameter ratio 3/5 is required to transmit 450kW at 120rpm with uniform twisting moment. The shear stress in the shaft must not exceed 60N/mm2 and the twist in a length of 2.5m must not exceed 1o. Calculate the maximum external diameter of the shaft satisfying these conditions. Take the modulus of rigidity C = 8 x 104N/mm2.
