Coffee and Primate Conservation Project 2014 Project proposal summary Coffee and primate conservation project 2014, the aim of project is to conserve the Javan gibbon’s population and it’s habitat in central java, as a part in contribution to the national action plan for Javan gibbon 2012-2021. Our specific aim is to preserve habitat of Javan gibbon in Western part of Dieng Mountain, through research, law enforcement and local community involvement. We will encourage young researchers and conservationist through series of training and field practices; improving law enforcement through participatory forest patrol, conducting school visit to raise conservation awareness about Javan gibbon and its habitat. Monitoring population and habitat will do through intensive study of Javan gibbon, ecology and coffee growing system in Sokokembang village. Last not the least is help coffee marketing activities, to promote conservation activities in Sokokembang and increasing alternative income as well.
Achievements 1. to improve law enforcement on habitat protection and species conservation Participatory forest patrol initiative (March – July 2014)
Series of meetings in the village level have been done to initiate forest protection based on participatory involvement and strenghten capacity of youth organization. We have invite village leaders, elderly and village youth organization, to introduce our program and how’s important village government and its role to conserve the forest. The meeting (20 April 2014 and 21 May 2014) has succeeded to dig information about village government concern about their unique forest and biodiversity. The response is so well, the result from this activities is, actually the village government have already forest protection law document. And this document have match with the conservation program of Javan gibbon, however there still lack of implementation to that village forest protection law, thus we will support to spread and to inform this document to
Coffee and Primate Conservation Project 2014 all six hamlets within Kayupuring village, and off course will try to find best practice to implement the forest protection rules based on community participation.
(meeting with youth organization and village govertment officers and elderly in Kayupuring village) Participatory Biodiversity Mapping, at Javan gibbon’s village, Kayupuring, Central Java, Indonesia (17-19 June 2014)
The main problems to raise awareness about forest and primate conservation around remaining forested habitat are very limited, even more there is no baseline information about species, ecology, spatial location and conservation status of the protected species. All these information are useful if we use to talk with people in the village to motivate them to conserve their biodiversity actually. The specific aim of this activities are to mine information about biodiversity especially wildlife that usually found in Kayupuring village area’s based on community knowledge and their field observation, and we add more detail information on their basic ecology and its conservation status, then we present on the village biodiversity map.
This program is a part of Our Coffee and Primate Conservation Project that funded by Fortwayne Children Zoo and Singapore Zoo, cooperation with Wildlife Lab, Forest Resource Conservation Dept, Faculty of Forestry, Gadjah Mada University, of Yogyakarta. We invite villagers and
Coffee and Primate Conservation Project 2014 guided by GIS expert from the university to discuss about wildlife that usually found in their village and forest, than we ask them to describe as clear as possible based on their field observation and we match this information to the field guide book as scientific clarification. And finally we use Google earth, to map wildlife encounter by the villagers.

Coffee and Primate Conservation Project 2014 2. to raise conservation awareness and to provide scientific information on endangered primates and habitats
Javan gibbon on the radio Even people of Pekalogan, there are still some of them not know their own forest and unique primate, such as Javan silvery gibbon, which can be found nowhere else on earth. Sokokembang forest is located about one and half hours from the city of Pekalongan. its located in the mountainous area and Pekalongan city located along the coastline of north Java sea. However, mountainous area in Petungkriono district, that also habitat of Javan gibbon actually is critically important for Pekalongan city, where this mountain as watercatchment areas from all the rivers streaming down through Pekalongan. We have initiated a public campaing to introduce Javan gibbon and its conservation habitat in Sokokembang forest through a radio program. The aim is to promote and raising conservation awareness of an endemic primates of Pekalongan regency . Collaborate with local radio “Radio Kota Batik” in Pekalongan, series of talkshow was succeed to be done at 24 April, 8 May , 22 May and 5 June 2014. We use this program not only to introduce our Primate Study Club but also more important to share information about our activities and to promote conservation of endangered primate which still exist in Pekalongan regency, that actually need more attention from people of Pekalongan themselves

Javan gibbon ecological study and Monitoring (March- July 2014) a long-term study about Javan gibbon and its ecology “Javan gibbon remote monitoring network” have been initiated in Sokokembang forest. Javan gibbon with their unique behaviour have been studied, by its calling behavior for population monitoring. The specific aim for primate ecological study and monitoring is to provide scientific information on Javan gibbon acoustic behavior,
to know their population dynamic and we will use this result to raise
conservation awareness, broadcasted calling of the gibbon and other rainforest natural sound recording to worldwide through the established website, www.swaraOwa.blogspot.com.
Starting at March 2014 we have set a tree house for javan gibbon monitoring, and monitoring activities conducted monthly in four consecutive days. Set of directional microphone and Smartphone have been used to record calling of the gibbon.

Scientific publications and project dissemination
We will present our project activities in the International Primatological Congress in, Hanoi, Vietnam 11-17 August 2014, an oral presentation entitled with “Coffee and Primate Conservation: a cup of Java for gibbon, will be presenting by Arif Setiawan. A poster presentation entitled with “Local people involvement to support the silvery Javan gibbon (Hylobates moloch) conservation in Sokokembang forest Kayupuring, Petungkriyono, Central Java, Indonesia” will be presented by Choiriatun Nur Annisa at the Southeast Asian Primate Symposium, in Bogor 18-22 July 2014 The 2nd Primate Survey Training, Sokokembang 9-11 June 2014
This activity was initiated last year in 2013, where we realize that primate conservation should be based on scientific information. And actually there is a problems to conserve endangered primate and its habitat in central java , that we lack of capacity and knowledge about primate survey method. Thus , the training aims are :1 to raise and encourage young primate researchers and conservationist in central Java. 2. To enhance knowledge and technical experience on field primate survey. 3. To establish professional network among young primatologist in central java. Totally 21 participants, were joint in 3 days training in Sokokembang (see photo.1), they are come from university students, forestry government staff ,Journalist, and local NGO from surrounding javan gibbon habitat in central java

(2014 training participants )
In this training, we introduce two methods that can be applied in the field for primate survey training, i.e “line transect” and “vocal count-triangulation” especially for gibbon survey. The training including room discussion, field practice (data collection) and its data analysis. During the training we also received coverage from national newspaper, and published at 11 June 2014. 3. to reduce habitat degradation and fragmentation in Western part of Dieng Mountains.
Sustainable Shade grown Coffee Initiative (March 2014-July 2014)
It has been one and half year long we initiate activities related to coffee and primate conservation in Sokokembang village. It’s very challenging experience for us and the villagers especially in Sokokembang. Coffee product from Sokokembang now growing up, and here is summaries of achievement on coffee production of Sokokembang.
1. Improvement on post harvesting coffee.
Coffee and Primate Conservation Project 2014 New method of post harvesting process has been introduced in Sokokembang coffee production, now farmer have been applied wet processing for coffee or fermentation method was introduced to the farmer by training. We invite coffee farmer from other region to give explanation to the farmer in Sokokembang how to process coffee based on fermentation process. As we know since many years before, coffee processing in Sokokembang is processed based on dry process without any improvement, that’s why the coffee taste also not so well.
(Improvement coffee process in Sokokembang) 2. Promotion a. “Sokokembang coffee” is a brand coffee product from Sokokembang village, and off course conservation activities in Sokokembang also raise attention, some local and national TV station have came to the village and make coverage of our activities. Through this publication coffee and conservation of Javan gibbon in Sokokembang receiving more public attention. One of the succeed publication is we have encourage Pak Tasuri (he is our field assistant, and also coffee farmer in Sokokembang) to receive environmental award from a national TV program (Liputan 6 award). He got full coverage and broadcasted nationally and invited to Jakarta to receive the award. See here for the full movie story from the SCTV.a national news paper also have published

Coffee and Primate Conservation Project 2014 3. Sustainable initiative and market penetrating
Coffee production now have been running, even though in small quantity, its attract not only buyers but also more important to coffee farmer, some of them want to sell coffee to Sokokembang with good price. Processing coffee also needs labor, some villagers also getting new job to involve in Sokokembang coffee production. We also assist sokokembang coffee to get in to the local market, and introduce coffee product to the local coffee shop.
We also encourage local people nearby to the forest to gain another income based on local resources. Palm sugar is also potential to give more economic value to the farmer, thus we were trained farmer to produce good quality of palm sugar, enhance their knowledge and also have been prepare the hows the market will be penetrated or marketing strategy.
