Tips for the College Application Process 1. Talk with your parents -- keep them informed throughout the application process 2. Attend any informational college nights (PARENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND) 3. SAT – If you want to improve your scores, take the next test on 4. ACT – If you want to improve your scores, take the next test on 5. Use THE SAME userid and password for every account you create (SAT, ACT, colleges) 6. Do not wait for the SAT or ACT score to apply to college 7. Apply to Colleges (4-5: reach, core, and safety) 8. DO PROVIDE your social security number on college applications, even if it says “optional” 9. Keep copies of applications and forms sent to colleges for your records 10. If you apply online, make sure to print/sign and mail the signature page and application fee 11. Counselor email address:
[email protected]. See webpage for phone & address 12. Write essays and have them PROOF READ!!! 13. Line up recommendations (give teachers 2 weeks advance notice) 14. Always click YES when asked if you waive your right to see your recommendations 15. Prepare a resume: Work Experience, Honors/Awards, Extracurriculars, Community Service 16. Request that your transcript be sent from the school by seeing Mrs. Elliott in Guidance 17. Request test results be sent directly from SAT or ACT (4 sent free but “hidden” on website) 18. Keep checklists and MEET DEADLINES!!! 19. Make sure you have an appropriate email address (
[email protected]) 20. Clean up your Facebook, Twitter and any other social media sites 21. If you are serious about a specific school, make an official visit (sign up online) 22. Frequently check your account at each college to which you apply 23. Meet Early Action deadlines for best chance of getting accepted FINANCIAL AID/SCHOLARSHIPS 24. Talk with your parents about how you will pay for college 25. Request financial aid applications from the colleges (it’s separate from admissions) 26. The FAFSA cannot be submitted until January 1st , but be prepared – tell your parents about the deadline they will need to have their tax information available 27. Check the scholarships webpage frequently, especially during spring semester 28. Listen to announcements, check school websites, and come by the guidance office for scholarship information 29. Attend Financial Aid Workshops with your parents 30. Avoid paying anyone to “find” scholarships for you 31. To get money….YOU MUST APPLY!!!!!! NCAA Please go online and apply to the NCAA Clearinghouse if you want to participate in athletics in college. There is a charge for the application.
