Crime Report • Minneapolis Police 3rd Precinct Crime Update provided by Don Greeley —Provided a flyer on how to stay informed on what’s happening in your neighborhood. —Update on the business Popeyes and heavy crime specific to that property. —There was a shoo.ng at 27th and 18th. Police are going to meet with Alondra Cano to discuss. —Tammy Johnston offered help gegng informa.on/answering ques.ons at the Safety Center. —Midtown Safety mee.ng announcement, June 23 6:30pm at Stewart Park. —Transit center crime update by Michael LaVine, Transit police. —Pros.tu.on and John sweeps happening along Lake about once a week. III. Developer IntroducNons • Developer introduc.ons of those interested in building or are currently building or using land in the Phillips neighborhoods.
—Stone's Throw Urban Farm, Caroline Devany provided some background on Stones Throw and announced that they have some lots available for use in the Ventura Village neighborhood. —Jim Dawds with BCB Construc.on/Prima Land Inc presented examples of their homes already built in Phillips as well as other metro loca.ons. Also offered some history of their company. —Project for Pride in Living overview, presented by Chris Deitling. PPL most known for Midtown Exchange Condos. Offered report on Phillips Partnership 2007 Housing Strategy and Phillips Partnership Housing Stabiliza.on 2011 Ini.a.ve and their accomplishments, including the Home Loan Program, and a handout of resources for home improvement. —Powderhorn Resident's Group, Kathy Wetzel-‐Mastel presented. Offering assistance with home buying. Spirit on Lake and Greenway Apartment are among their projects. Developing strategies to manage vacant proper.es. Also providing first-‐.me home owner assistance and foreclosure preven.on. —Eden Spencer presented on Greater Metropolitan Housing Trust. They partner with PRG and others providing rehab loans, home improvement loans and other housing services. Have rehabbed about 20 homes within Phillips neighborhood. —Denise Eloundou presented on Southside Housing Resource Center, also offering home improvement loan assistance. —Habitat for Humanity, Chad Dipman presented. Recently has had a steady stream of units underway. They handle rehab foreclosures and accessible homes. Ren.ng a lot to Stones Throw. —Urban Homeworks. Community asset building. They currently do not have many homes in Phillips but seeking opportuni.es. Applicants provide community service in exchange for rent subsidies. Also partnering with PPL and Community Land Trust to make homes affordable, among others. Try to buy land in min of 4-‐blocks chunks and introduce neighbors within those neighborhoods for community building. IV. Banyan 2015 partnership proposal • Banyan 2015 partnership proposal with MPNAI, presented by Joann Essenburg and Naomi Mohammed. Offered overview of their Community Partnership Report and 2015-‐2016 goals to 1) Recognize Banyan Light House Network, 2) Maintain the 11 LHN Block Club currently in Midtown and 3) Expand to bring in 3-‐7 new block clubs from Midtown. Monthly mee.ngs and other efforts have been successful. Making an effort to get more Light House signs in neighborhood, which indicate an organized block club. June 2015-‐May 2016 proposal provided for board iden.fying the specific goals and .meline and milestones for comple.on of those goals. Sugges.on by Shirley to add MPNAI logo onto s.cker on back of Light House signs; Sunny to provide horizontal logo version to Banyan. Offering community block club breakfasts every second Saturday of the month. Trying to facilitate affordable housing in Phillips and South Minneapolis. MOTION: Mo.on to approve the Banyan/MPNAI MOU and approve $10,000 toward partnership and bring the mo.on for vote to board at June mee.ng. Sunshine made mo.on to approve; Jana seconded. Mo.on passed. Shirley Heyer abstained due to possible conflict of interest.
MOTION: Mo.on that the board support the needs of the neighborhood to rehab/build affordable housing and address use of vacant lots to replenish our Phillips housing stock. Announcements • Fes.val announcement: Midtown Phillips Festival, July 25, 2015, Saturday, Noon to 8 pm, Stewart Park, 2700 block of 12th Ave. So. • Request by Somali Radio sta.on for $300 to finance wri.ng of proposal for grant monies. MOTION: Evan made a mo.on to approve $300 in funds for grant wri.ng to support Somali Radio sta.on. Jana seconded. Mo.on passed. Mahamed Cali and Shirley Heyer abstained from vote due to possible conflict of interest. Mee.ng adjourned.
