A
s most people have already heard either from friends, family, or on social media sites, one of Conway's very own long-time teachers is battling with some serious medical issues. Mrs. Betsy Finley is in the hospital at Barnes in St. Louis, Missouri as she remains in critical condition. Mrs. Finley has been a staff member at the Conway High School for many years. She teaches multiple classes such as junior high computers, computer applications, and accounting 1 and 2. She is also the adviser to Conway's FBLA club. “Mrs. Finley could always be counted on for an uplifting smile and good morning each day. She is so proud of her family always updating her friends on her kids and grandkids, showing pictures and videos. You could not ask for a nicer person to call a friend,” said science teacher, Kristen Potteiger. Towards the middle of January Mrs. Finley started getting sick. She was soon diagnosed with a flu virus that had been going around. As days passed, she was taken to the emergency room in Lebanon, Missouri because her condition had worsened. She then was diagnosed with pneumonia and emitted into the hospital. Soon after, Mrs. Finley then started having problems with her liver enzymes. She was soon transferred from Lebanon hospital to a hospital in Columbia, Missouri. In Colombia, Mrs. Finley’s liver enzymes still continued to rise which was causing problems with her other organs. The doctors at the hospital decided it would be best to send Mrs. Finley to Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. Since Mrs. Finley has been at Barnes, she has had a very eventful time. She has been admitted into the ICU which is where she is currently staying. Her liver enzymes have decreased but are also not anywhere near where they need to be. She has also suffered from a variety of organ failures during this time. She has endured a variety of spinal taps and
test to help her team of doctors best treat her. “Mrs. Finley is a valuable asset to our staff. She is a veteran teacher who is a leader that not only teaches well but creates a positive culture thin the teacher core. We send prayers her way so she can get well and get back with us soon,” said Mr. Tyler Vestal, assistant principal of Conway High School. As many people know having to go through something like this is hard. Mrs. Finley’s family has been by her side through all of this. Another thing most people know is how costly traveling to all these places are, paying for places to stay, and purchasing food and such. So, the Laclede County R-1 School District students have been hard at work creating ways to help raise money for Mrs. Finley and her family. There have been t-shirts that have been made courtesy of Rodeo Roots, a “pass the hat” fundraiser that is done at all home basketball games, and many other ideas that have came about and may eventually be put into action to help raise money. If you or someone you know would like to make a donation to Mrs. Finley and help support her and her family through this tough time, donations can be made through the high school at Conway. For further information on how to do so you can contact the school at (417)-589-2941.

Homecoming was a success!!! By Reagan Dame
CONWAY CHRONICLES
What girl doesn’t dream of becoming the queen of a Homecoming? Campaigns for votes often begin weeks before the Homecoming events. Conway became quite creative with ours this year. The cheerleaders were the creative group whom were in charge of all the planning of the exciting Homecoming. Just to name a few: Kason Dame, Rachel Daniel, Rachael Haddock, Madysen Jones, Mariah Shell, Meghyn Shockley, and Lauren Whitehead. Our Conway cheer mascot was none other than Daniel Goss. “This has been an exciting year. We have learned a lot of new stuff and become very close. I like how we get the chance to go to Districts with the boys,” said sophomore cheerleader Madysen Jones. Richmond Joines, a respectful teacher from Conway, is the cheerleading sponsor this year. With the help of Mrs. Joines and the Conway Cheerleaders; Spirit Days, Pep Rallies, the Homecoming Ceremony, and the dance were all a part of Homecom-

CONWAY CHRONICLES
Every year, the Conway Bears Basketball team hosts the Conway Invitational tournament. At every invitational tournament, there’s a hospitality room for the coaches, administrators, and visiting cheerleaders. The person who has prepared the hospitality room is Connie Frost, the owner of Three Fat Ladies Catering. Connie has supplied the hospitality room for “18 years and has decided to retire from covering the entire hospitality room for the tournament,” said Coach Clay Bilyeu, the athletic director for the school. Recently due to Connie’s overwhelming help and support, Coach Bilyeu rewarded her with a dedication of service plaque. Connie has been cooking and catering for a long time. She said, “I’ve been catering for 14 years and I love to cook. I’ve been cooking since I was 10.” Connie said, “I have enjoyed doing the hospitality room. I’ve met some wonderful people, and I get to see my school friends at least once a year. It was very nice to be recognized for the 18 years of work.” Coach Bilyeu added, “Connie has been a big part to the success over the years for the Conway Invitational. Our hospitality room has been well known for many years and that is all because of Connie.”
In the past, Conway High School boasted an Academic team, but over the years it faded away and was slowly forgotten. It was not until last year when Mr. Donald McCorkendale, the high school science teacher, and Mrs. Amanda Yarbrough, the junior high science teacher, resurrected and reassembled the team! On February 4th, 2017, the Academic Team wowed many at their conference tournament when four students from Conway took home an individual award for answering the most toss-up questions correctly in the tournament. Toss-up questions are random questions that cover many categories and subjects, so the students must learn to be alert and quick with their thinking. Conway students Shelby Clark, Riley Cathey, Tony Difonzo, and Chris Calton walked away from the tournament all smiles with a 5th, 8th, 9th, and 10th place medals. When asked about the team’s success, Mr. McCorkendale said, “Considering it’s the first year back, it’s pretty awesome!” On January 23rd of 2017 at the Tuscombia Tournament, the only student to take home an individual prize was high school junior Cole Howerton. He also received a second place medal for answering the most toss-up questions correctly. Cole stated, “I enjoy getting the chance to socialize every week and getting the chance to meet people at competitions. I also really enjoy learning many new things and just generally having a blast!” The Academic Team consists of twenty active members along with club sponsors Mr. McCorkendale and Mr. Robert Smith, high school math teacher. The members and sponsors practice twice a week after school on Wednesdays and Fridays. On Wednesdays,
the team researches common topics that are seen at competitions and work in study groups to organize, review, and discuss the subject in detail. On Fridays, the club splits into teams and rigorously competes against each other as they would in an actual competition. With their hard work and dedication, they seem to put the “know” in “know how.” This is only their second year, and they are on a great winning track; just think what they will be doing in the years to come! Go Bears!

Upgrade Time for the Lady Bears By Jessica Rizor CONWAY CHRONICLES
This year the Conway Lady Bears softball team is hard at work trying to find new ways to raise money for field upgrades, new equipment, and to help start working towards an outdoor sound system for the field. One way they plan is doing this is also helpful to you. How is that so, you ask? Well they plan on having sign spaces that could have your company, club, or any organization's logo on them. The signs space will be 4×8 feet in size and will cost $300 for the first year and then only $150 every year you have the sign after that. The spots will be located at the outfields fence line at the softball field in Conway. Coach Miller said, “The Lady Bears and I would like to thank all who have purchased a sign already and those who plan on purchasing a sign. Thank you all for the support you all have given us to help prepare for our 2017 season. If you or someone you know may want to purchase one of these sign spots, you can contact the Conway High School or a Lady Bear softball member for further information on what steps you can take to have one and support the Lady Bears.
