Aim •

We chose this project because we wanted to see if excise duties would discourage young teens from vaping.

•

We decided to use cigarettes as a comparison to e-cigarettes because teens think vape ‘isn’t bad for you’.

•

We surveyed 100 students to see the results.

•

We strongly believe that excise duties should be put on vape , excise duties where put on cigarettes and they have discouraged teenagers from smoking as they could not afford them so we would like to do the same to vapes .

•

Therefore we think that less people would vape if they where more expensive.

Excise duties -On e-cigarettes, there is no excise duties and are rather cheap in Ireland vary from €1.50 in a local shop in Dundalk. This will attract young teens to buy vape as they are inexpensive. Young teens do not know the effects of vape also. Vaping is roughly 80% cheaper than cigarettes. -One question on our survey was ‘Do you think there is a difference between vapes and cigarettes? Explain your answer.’ Most of the students or even all of them said ‘yes, vape is not bad for you’ or ‘cigarettes kills you but vape doesn’t’. Further on in this presentation you will learn the effects of vaping, because we bet you don’t know them already.

Survey results

Survey Summary We took a survey around our school to find out some key facts. On 100 students 9% have smoked/tried a cigarette before, and 91% have never smoked/ tried a cigarette before. 27% of these students have vaped or have tried a vape before and 73% have never vaped before. These results show that since the government put excise duties on cigarettes, not as much people smoke because of the high cost of around €12. The excise duties have worked.

What is vaping? •

Vaping: the inhale and exhale the vapour produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device.

A ‘vape’ also known as an electronic cigarette is the inhale and exhale of the vapour produced by an electronic cigarette.

In a vape the liquid is heated to generate an aerosol ,commonly called a “vapour”

What is smoking? •

Smoking :The action or habit of inhaling and exhaling the smoke of tobacco .

A ‘cigarette’ is a cylinder of finely but tobacco rolled in paper for smoking.

•

In a cigarette there is a roll of Tobacco leaves

Effects of smoking cigarettes: - Smoking can cause cancer nearly anywhere in the body. - Smoking cigarettes also can give you a higher risk of getting a stroke or heart attack. - Smoking cigarettes can make it harder for girls to become pregnant and can also effect the baby’s health before and after birth.

Effects of vaping:

Vaping can provoke inflammation to the lung tissue. Vaping can also give you a higher risk of getting a stroke or heart attack and cancer nearly anywhere in the body.
