COUGAR SCALPEL HARD WORK AT THE BAKE SALE HAS PAID OFF! Last Tuesday (September, 20) we had our second AED bake sale! With all of our hard work, we pulled off a very successful bake sale. We made over $400 in profit! Bowls of fried rice were being served non-stop. Plates with hot dogs piled on top were flying out from the hands of our members. Our bake sales, not only help us raise funds for our organization, but also play a vital role in fostering camaraderie between our members. When the crowd died down, the members found time to catch up with each other, and learn more about one another. Now, our goal for the next bake sale is to reach $500, and with a hardworking group like ours, we can definitely reach that goal easily!
RESEARCH TIDBIT: ADAPTING TO SENSORY CHANGES IN OUR ENVIRONMENT Dr. Charles Layne, a Professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance at the University of Houston, focuses his research on identifying how we adapt to novel sensory environments. Dr. Layne’s overarching goal is to identify if there is a common process in adapting to a new sensory environment. If such a process exists, this can help us predict the outcome of any situation that we are in. The significance of Dr. Layne’s work can reach as far up as space in helping astronauts adapt to zero gravity and back to Earth in helping astronauts re-adjust to the gravitational phenomenon. His work

not only benefits the space-flight programs, but also in assisting patients who are affected physically, due to a disease or trauma, adapt to their new environments.
Dr. Layne’s road to research began in his last semester of undergraduate at University of Texas at Austin, when he worked at a clinic assisting patients who were affected by stroke. He decided to receive his Masters in Adapted Physical Education. Dr. Layne continued fostering his interest on the mechanisms of the human body, specifically posture. He later received his Doctorate for his work in motor control. While working at Johnson Space Center several years later, Dr. Layne tailored his work to understanding sensory information and adaptation in relation to standing and walking. **Fun Fact: Walking is a series of controlled falls**
Dr. Layne’s advice for undergraduate students interested in research is to find a professor to do research as quickly as possible, and to be prepared to start at the bottom. However, nothing is wasted during this learning process, because each and every moment in research counts. Dr. Layne highly recommends programs, such as SURF and PURS, because these programs can help pair students with a professor and help them become focused on research.
SPEAKER OF THE DAY: Dr. Connie Nguyen Dr. Connie Nguyen received her medical education from University of Texas Houston. She received her residency training from University of Texas - Houston as well. Dr. Nguyen is specialized in Dermatology, and currently runs her own clinic called Premier Derm Center. Dr. Nguyen is also affiliated with Memorial Hermann Hospital.
