Objective: This is the first in a series of events during CSW that will address gender equality and women’s empowerment in humanitarian settings. This event will highlight the voices of women and their role as first responders in humanitarian action. The event will feature verbal testimonies from women as first responders, and a visual gallery showcasing their work in the Philippines, Liberia, Vanuatu, Haiti and Gaza. It will create a space for women active in emergencies responses to elevate their voices, share their experiences and learning, and be recognized as key leaders in humanitarian action. Thursday 17th March Achieving Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Humanitarian Action through the World Humanitarian Summit
Objective: As the second event during CSW to focus on Women in Humanitarian Action, this unique roundtable consisting of high level UN officials, Member States, NGOs and Civil Society Groups will highlight the importance of women and girls’ rights, resilience and leadership roles in humanitarian action, including concerted steps to address gender based violence. The roundtable will address how stakeholders from all sectors and regions of the world can be part of the launch of commitments to women and girls empowerment at the World Humanitarian Summit (WHS) in May 2016 in Istanbul. The Permanent Mission of Jordan to the United Nations
Objective: As the third event during CSW to focus on Women in Humanitarian Action, this panel event will explore the possibilities for different stakeholders at the WHS to implement over-arching WHS gender commitments within their own institution’s work. The event will provide an opportunity for UN, Member State, private sector and civil society representatives to discuss how all actors can turn their commitments into action following the WHS. Monday 21st March Integrating Gender into Humanitarian Response: The IASC Gender Standby Capacity Project
Objective: Completing the series of events on Women in Humanitarian Action, this event highlights the IASC Gender Standby Capacity Project. GenCap Advisers play a unique role in the facilitation of gender equality programming in humanitarian action. A GenCap Adviser’s ability to provide technical expertise and leadership on gender issues can help determine the success of humanitarian responses in catering to the needs of women, girls, boys and men. GenCap Advisers from Nepal, Afghanistan and Jordan will share their experiences, challenges and lessons learnt on gender equality programming in different types of emergencies.
