Annual Status Report 2017
CTC TEN FOUNDATION @ TEN Things are so busy at the Safe Hub, we don’t often get a chance to reflect back on where we’ve been. The occasion of our 10th anniversary as a Foundation provides us an opportunity to do just that. While there are so many exciting challenges ahead let’s take a look back at what we had in mind when our work began in 2007. The goals we outlined then included: • Leaving a physical footprint in Khayelitsha in memory of F&M soccer player Chris Campbell • Creating a lifeline between Khayelitsha Township, an impoverished area on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa and our community.
The intern program we began back in 2008 has provided support and opportunity not only for the participants and staff at the Safe Hub but in turn to the those who volunteered as interns and fellows as well. The interns/ fellows came from a variety of backgrounds with myriad skills and to a person, each made a unique contribution to the lives of all the stakeholders in Khayelitsha. This past June the F&M Men’s soccer team completed its fourth trip to South Africa and was joined this year at the Safe Hub by the women’s team as well. This aspect of the F&M soccer program makes it unique among colleges and universities. Their special relationship with the field gives a much deeper meaning to the players and families who have traveled there and engaged with the Safe Hub staff and participants. But like all good things the vision and goals of this project have evolved over time and now include so much more. The work is never done in the township but 10 years on we are in a much better position to understand and affect change in ways we never dreamed of when this journey began. As we look forward we see so many possibilities to reinforce our original commitment to the CTC Ten Safe Hub as well as expand the ways we can help affect positive change in the lives of so many.
• Funding interns to stay in South Africa and work with our partners to serve the community at the field as best we can • Take the F&M team to South Africa and run soccer clinics in the Township in conjunction with our partners. In the intervening years we have managed, with the incredible support of our donors, to accomplish most of these goals as originally outlined. The physical footprint, in the form of the field and the Safe Hub building, has hosted hundreds of events and programs touching thousands of community members over the past ten years. The lifeline between the Safe Hub and the CTC Ten community has taken many forms over the years. From the hundreds of visits to Khayelitsha to the personal connections that have been nurtured over the years, the bonds between us are strong and growing stronger each year.
And none of it would be possible without the inspiration provided by the life and legacy of Christopher–combined with the hard work of so many people over the past ten years. With the words of Martin Luther King that “Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly” and “I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be” as one of our guiding principles we intend to keep the light shining at the CTC Ten Safe Hub for another 10 years and beyond.

CTC Ten Field Administration Programme Officer University This year, AMANDLA has begun a very exciting journey with our very own Programme Officers, Afro, Fanelwa, and Anelani. After numerous years of devotion to the cause at the CTC Ten Safe-Hub, they have been brought under the very close guidance of Yanga Gcilishe to grow as professionals. Through careful and close mentorship, Yanga is preparing all three POs to take on more leadership and responsibility at the field. Anelani, Fanelwa, and Afro are
the living embodiment of what the CTC Ten Safe-Hub and AMANDLA stand for. We are so excited to see what they will do as they become more and more integral to the decisions being made on the front lines! Day in and day out, they have proven themselves to be more than capable of shouldering the immense responsibility that comes with sport-based youth development. While the journey will be long, it is well deserved and will be beneficial to the POs and participants alike.

Outside of immediate family, my longest standing relationship has been with the beautiful game. Soccer has been an integral tool in my understanding of the comings and goings of the world. It has accompanied me around North America, into Western Europe, across the Pacific to East Asia, and finally to Cape Town in the Global South. I credit soccer with teaching me not only about the world but also myself. As it turns out, 28 years of debts to the game cannot be repaid in 12 months.
Though I traded my soccer boots for cross-country spikes in high school, I have experienced the empowering nature of sport, including soccer, ever since I can remember. For me, athletics has acted as a tool for engaging with young girls and women, whether in Philadelphia, my hometown, or Morocco, where I lived and studied during university.
For that, I am grateful that the CTC Ten Foundation has allowed me to continue chasing my goal of seeing that soccer—a game that has taught me so much—does the exact same for boys and girls from Khayelitsha even if the only thing we have in common is a steadfast love for kicking a ball around.
Thanks to this incredible opportunity from the CTC Ten Foundation, I am able to work with like-minded people in a unique space—one that believes wholeheartedly in the power of sport to transcend cultural and gender barriers. Working in fundraising and the Girls Inclusion program this year, I’m looking forward to discovering more about the development sphere and women’s issues worldwide, and (hopefully) fine-tuning my soccer skills that have become quite rusty over the years

Events and Programming HERITAGE DAY - September 25, 2017
On September 25th, South Africa celebrated Heritage Day. At the CTC Ten Safe-Hub, we celebrated the diverse cultures and communities that make up the rainbow nation. The doors were opened boys under 10 years old to come out to the field for educational learning and soccer. Despite cold and dreary weather, 123 boys turned out for a morning in which they were introduced to the traditional dances and celebrations of South Africa’s many peoples. As the morning turned to afternoon, the boys took to the field for a fun and competitive 5-a-side tournament. When all was said and done, Chippa United stood atop the podium after a well fought match against Young Pirates.
GIRLS INC PILOT Young women in Khayelitsha face massive barriers that often make participation in sports difficult. This year at the CTC Ten Safe-Hub, AMANDLA launched a Girls Inclusion Pilot Program to increase female participation and retention by providing female-oriented activities to address the unique obstacles girls face in Khayelitsha. Program Officer Siphokazi (Afro) led the charge to form the Safe-Hub’s first all-female 11-a-side team and organize weekly supplemental activities for female participants. With the initial pilot underway, there are already plans and fundraising initiatives to expand the Girls Inclusion Program for next year, all in an effort to create a more inclusive space for all participants at the Safe-Hub!
24-HOUR TOURNAMENT - November 19, 2017 From 9:00am on Saturday, November 19th until 5:00am of the next morning, the CTC Ten Safe-Hub was constantly abuzz with boys, girls, young men and young women showcasing their skills. As the culmination of the PlayMaker experience, our devoted coaches had the opportunity to organize a day-long series of tournaments for hundreds of local participants anywhere from 10 to 20 years old. The tournaments ran
WOMEN’S DAY - August 9, 2017 “When you strike a woman, you strike a rock.” This powerful, historically-charged statement began and ended Women’s Day celebrations at the CTC Ten Safe-Hub on August 9th. Through games, skits, songs, and workshops, the Hub brought the community together to celebrate the contribution of South African women. Over 200 young women and girls attended the day, 30 of which included parents and grandparents that accompanied their children to the event—this was among the largest showing of parental engagement at the Safe-Hub yet! The day culminated with a U12 Girls Tournament and a Staff vs. U16 Girls match, where the U16 Girls proved their skill with a 2-1 win.
one after the other, crowning the top team for each and every age group, concluding with the Night League championship, which celebrated some of our longest attending and most committed participants. The day and night and morning were a fantastic success for PlayMakers, supporting staff, and the countless number of participants who came to the field.
NOTABLE VISITORS AND EVENTS Lynk Visit In July, the Safe-Hub hosted Henry Lynk, a cinematographer and friend of the CTC Ten Foundation. Henry has worked on various Hollywood films throughout his career, and offered his filming expertise and equipment to produce a professional-quality mini-film focused on the impact of the Safe-Hub. With the help of his sons, Henry spent a few days gathering interviews with staff and participants, action shots of programming, and even some drone footage. We can’t wait to see what Henry and his sons create!
