CURRICULUM OUTLINE Year Five, 2018 - Term One This curriculum outline is to inform you of the content that your child will be learning in Year Five during Term One. It explains the units taught in each of the Key Learning Areas: Religious Education, English, Mathematics, Human Society and its Environment, Science and Technology, Creative Arts and Personal Development/Health/Physical Education. Suggestions and ideas are given on how you can further support your child at home. Dates for the calendar: Tuesday - Thursday, May 15th - 17th: NAPLAN Friday - 31st August: Canberra Excursion

Religious Education includes prayer, liturgy, and the way we live our lives and treat each other daily. During Term One the Religion units to be covered are: The Reign of God: Reaching Out in Justice This unit explores the Church's mission to build a world of justice. Justice is an important element of bringing about the reign of God. Students will explore examples of injustice and how the Church continues the mission of Jesus by working for justice. In their exploration students will need to look at decision-making and conscience. Lent: A Time for Growth This unit examines Jesus' life in the Gospels and the student's experiences of rejection and acceptance. Students will be challenged to reflect on the experience of God with us today in times of difficulty. Prayer, fasting and almsgiving will be linked to Caritas material and raising awareness for Project Compassion. Lent commences on Wednesday February 14th with Ash Wednesday. How can you help? ● Talk to your child about their religious experiences and understandings. ● Discuss consequences of decisions with your children ● Notice injustices in newspapers and in the news on television ● Attend religious celebrations at school. ● Take an active role in your Parish community and attend Mass.

ENGLISH Reading ~ Children will be involved in a variety of reading experiences such as: independent reading, shared/modelled reading, serial reading, home reading and guided reading. They will be given opportunities to practise reading strategies while reading texts appropriate to their level of development. Library lessons are held each Tuesday for Year 5.

Writing ~ Children will be involved in a range of writing activities such as: modelled writing, joint text construction, independent writing and guided writing. Children will work independently to practise writing strategies and actively engage in the writing process on a daily basis. They will also be involved in modelled writing to enable them to participate in the construction of a written text while being supported by their peers and their teacher. The unit we will focus on in Term One is Effective! Using language for effect. Talking and Listening ~ Students will be given daily opportunities, formally and informally, to talk about and listen to a variety of text types across all Key Learning Areas. Talking and Listening experiences will focus on constructing meaning from spoken language. Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling are taught and practised during the daily English block. Specific skills will be programmed according to the student’s need. Handwriting/Typing ~ Writing skills will continue to be taught and developed during specific handwriting lessons with focus on size, slope, shape, fluency, formation and legibility. Children will be encouraged to use cursive writing in all lessons except Mathematics where print is the norm. Students will be encouraged to use correct typing skills when using technology. How you can help? ● Encourage family conversations; invite your child to express ideas and feelings, play games together. ● Avoid negative comments about children’s spelling. Instead, encourage them to read over their work looking for possible errors and when in doubt, use a dictionary. ● Ask them to explain strategies they use at school to help them in English. ● Encourage daily reading

MATHEMATICS Students will be encouraged to investigate, problem solve and develop appropriate ways to record understandings. Practical activities and open-ended tasks will be the basis of learning experiences. The topics covered in Term One include: Working Mathematically: asking questions and using appropriate mental or written strategies, and technology, to solve problems. Students will use appropriate terminology to describe and link mathematical ideas, check statements for accuracy and explain reasoning. Number and Algebra: Whole Number - students recognise, model, represent and order numbers to at least 10 000 and apply place value to a range of numbers. Fractions and Decimals - students compare, order and calculate with fractions, decimals and percentages. Measurement and Geometry: Length - students measure, compare and order lengths/temperatures of various objects using formal and informal units of measure. 3D Space - students identify three-dimensional objects, including prisms and pyramids, on the basis of their properties, and visualises, sketches and constructs them given drawings of different views. Statistics and Probability: Data - students use appropriate methods to collect data and constructs, interprets and evaluates data displays, including dot plots, line graphs and two-way tables.

How you can help? · Build confidence! Express positive attitudes towards mathematics and praise your child’s efforts. Focus on the mathematical process and reasoning while obtaining an answer. · Allow opportunities for your child to use mathematics in real life situations, such as measuring ingredients in the kitchen or budgeting for items when shopping.

HUMAN SOCIETY and its ENVIRONMENT

Our HSIE unit this term is ‘Factors That Shape Places: Antarctica’’. The students will explore issues and decisionmaking involved in human interaction with a significant world environment, the Antarctic. The unit focuses on how beliefs about human interaction have changed over time, how the environment influences the human characteristics of places and the management of spaces. How you can help? · Discuss and provide opinions on local, national and global issues, problems and trends. · Use the newspaper to identify current issues involving the environment.

SCIENCE and TECHNOLOGY

This term students will not have formal lessons. Science and Technology lessons will take place during Terms 2 and 4.

CREATIVE ARTS

Visual Arts This term in Visual Arts, students will explore the technique of textiles. Students will explore how stories have been represented in textiles in different times and cultures.. Students will investigate and use a range of materials, textile processes and techniques such as colouring, stitching, quilting, layering and adding objects to create surface patterns, textures and other visual effects. How can you help? · Ensure your child has an art shirt at school – an old shirt from home is sufficient.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT/HEALTH/PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Personal Development/Health In Year Five all students will participate in PE/Sport completing skills development in PE and real game situations during the weekly sport time. PD/Health lessons assist in developing in students the knowledge and understanding, skills, values and attitudes that will enable them to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. PE lessons deal with the skills involved with specific physical education concepts. Sport lessons target specific skills required for a range of games, or sporting events, with students actually playing the games or participating in the event. Teams will be ability, gender and year level mixed to encourage working as a team and develop social skills further.

Physical Education This Term, Stage 3 students will be participating in a variety of fun experiences encouraging skill development and physical fitness. AFL will be the focus sport and students will take part in skill development clinics facilitated by the Auskick association. Sport will cover a range of game based skills incorporating elements of the lessons taught in Physical Education including Gala Days and School Sporting events. Students are to wear their sports uniform on both Wednesday and Friday please. How can you help? · Encourage your child to do their best and participate in a variety of sports and activities.

Encourage personal fitness by means of outdoor games and exercise. Model positive lifestyle habits by balancing work, fitness and recreation times. Share your interests and talents related to sport.

Home Learning Students in Year Five are expected to spend 30 minutes four times per week undertaking Home Learning Tasks which are meaningful and relevant to learning in the classroom. These will include: · · · ·

Independent Reading (15 min) – to be recorded in their Home Reading Log English and Mathematics tasks Incomplete work Preparation for assignments - collection of resources, print images, etc.

Due to Year Five using the iPads, students will receive their home learning activities via their Google folder. Home Learning will be set on Monday and due Friday (marked on the following Monday).

Behaviour Management Year Five follow the school rules of being respectful, responsible and safe in the classroom setting. Year Five teachers will work collaboratively to ensure consistency in behaviour management following the SPB4L Classroom Correction Sequence.

Positive behaviours will also be rewarded in Year Five with the use of: verbal praise/encouragement reward systems such as a Year 5 Behaviour-Opoly (individual) and class marbles (team). School merit awards – 3 awards will be given out each week as per the School Awards Policy. The Chill Out area has two uses in the Year 5 classroom, it can be used as an area for negative behaviour or an area for students to retreat when feeling the need, eg. stressed, angry, upset, etc.
