CURRICULUM OUTLINE Year Five, 2018 - Term Two This curriculum outline is to inform you of the content that your child will be learning in Year 5 during Term Two. Please discuss each Key Learning Area with them and ask them to share their Term 2 Personal Learning Goal with you.

Dates for the calendar:​ NAPLAN Week 3 15th - 17th May: Language Conventions (​40 minutes), ​Writing (​40 minutes), ​Reading (​50 minutes​) and Numeracy (​50 minutes). Friday - 31st August: Canberra Excursion

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Religious Education includes prayer, liturgy, and the way we live our lives and treat each other daily. During Term Two the Religion units to be covered are: Easter:​ A time for hope and new life This unit explore the components of the Easter Vigil and that through Baptism we share in the life, death and Resurrection of Jesus. Pentecost: Celebrating the Presence of the Holy Spirit This unit explores the presence of the Spirit of God in all creation, in the early Christian community, in individuals and the community today. How can you help? ● Talk to your child about their religious experiences and understandings. ● Discuss consequences of decisions with your children. ● Attend religious celebrations at school.

ENGLISH Reading​ ~ Children will be involved in a variety of reading experiences such as: independent, shared/modelled, serial, home and guided reading. They will be given opportunities to practise reading strategies while reading texts appropriate to their level of development. Library lessons are held each Tuesday for Year 5. Writing​ ~ Children will be involved in a range of writing activities such as: modelled writing, joint text construction, independent writing and guided writing. Children will work independently to practise writing strategies and actively engage in the writing process on a daily basis. They will also be involved in modelled writing to enable them to participate in the construction of a written text while being supported by their peers and their teacher. The unit we will focus on in Term Two is I Have A Viewpoint: Recognising and exploring viewpoints.

Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling​ are taught and practised during the daily English block. Specific skills will be programmed according to the student’s need. Handwriting/Typing​ ~ Writing skills will continue to be taught and developed during specific handwriting lessons with focus on size, slope, shape, fluency, formation and legibility. Children will be encouraged to use cursive writing in all lessons except Mathematics where print is the norm. Students will be encouraged to use correct typing skills when using technology. How you can help? ● Encourage family conversations; invite your child to express ideas and feelings, play games together. ● Avoid negative comments about children’s spelling. Instead, encourage them to read over their work looking for possible errors and when in doubt, use a dictionary. ● Ask them to explain strategies they use at school to help them in English. ● Encourage daily reading from a range of texts - newspapers, magazines, picture books, novels, documentaries, etc.

MATHEMATICS Students will be encouraged to investigate, problem solve and develop appropriate ways to record understandings. Practical activities and open-ended tasks will be the basis of learning experiences. The topics covered in Term Two include: Working Mathematically - asking questions and using appropriate mental or written strategies, and technology, to solve problems. Students will use appropriate terminology to describe and link mathematical ideas, check statements for accuracy and explain reasoning. Number and Algebra – ​Multiplication and Division ​- students select and apply appropriate strategies for multiplication and division, and apply the order of operations to calculations involving more than one operation. Patterns and Algebra​ - ​ students generalise properties of odd and even numbers, generate number patterns and complete simple number sentences by calculating missing values. Measurement and Geometry​: Time - students ​use  24-hour  time  and  am  and  pm notation in real-life situations, and  constructs timelines 2D Space - ​students ​manipulates, classifies and draws two ​dimensional shapes, including equilateral, isosceles and scalene triangles, and describes their properties. Angles​ - ​students will measure and construct angles, and apply angle relationships to find unknown angles. How you can help? ● Build confidence! Express positive attitudes towards mathematics and praise your child’s efforts. Focus on the mathematical process and reasoning while obtaining an answer. ● Allow opportunities for your child to use mathematics in real life situations, such as measuring ingredients in the kitchen or budgeting for items when shopping. ●

HUMAN SOCIETY and its ENVIRONMENT This term students will not have formal lessons. Human Society and Its Environment lessons will take place during Term 3.

Science and Technology    

This term students will explore two units: ‘It’s Electrifying!’ ​Wks 1-5 This unit will investigate how electrical circuits provide a means of transferring and transforming electricity. Students will also discover how energy from a variety of sources can be used to generate electricity and this knowledge can inform personal and community-based decisions about using these sources sustainably. Students will also experience how light from a source forms shadows and can be absorbed, reflected and refracted. ‘Designed For Life - Building the Future’ ​Wks 6-10 This unit will explore how ​s​ystems​ in built environments are designed to meet the needs of people. How you can help? ● Go on neighbourhood walk and discuss all the uses of power. ● Look at and discuss the effectiveness of different services within your local area. ● Have safety talks regarding electricity and its use for a range of objects. ● Look at and discuss the effectiveness of different services within your local area. ● Identify and describe different buildings, their use and functions within your local area - past, present or future ● Look at photographs, plans and maps - discuss changes that have taken place.

CREATIVE ARTS

Dance This term in Dance, students ​will use a range of stimuli to manipulate, shape and construct individual and group sequences. Students will talk and write critically about their dance experience both as participants and as members of a dance audience.

How can you help? ● Ensure your child is in PE uniform for dance sessions. ● Ensure your child to discuss what they have been involved in during Dance lessons at school. ● Watch youtube clips, live performances, encourage your child to dance at parties and functions or allow your child to participate in dance lessons/activities outside of school.

PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT/HEALTH/PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Personal Development/Health In Year Five all students will participate in PE/Sport completing skills development in PE and real game situations during the weekly sport time. PD/Health ​lessons assist in developing in students the knowledge and understanding, skills, values and attitudes that will enable them to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. The unit for this term is​ Keeping Myself Safe Around The Road and Water.

PE ​lessons deal with the skills involved with specific physical education concepts. Sport​ lessons target specific skills required for a range of games, or sporting events, with students actually playing the games or participating in the event. Teams will be ability, gender and year level mixed to encourage working as a team and develop social skills further.

Physical Education   This Term, Stage 3 students will be participating in a variety of fun experiences encouraging skill development and physical fitness. Athletics and netball will be the focus sports and students will take part in skill development in preparation for the school’s athletics carnival. Sport will cover a range of game based skills incorporating elements of the lessons taught in Physical Education including Gala Days and School Sporting events. Students are to wear their sports uniform on both Wednesday and Friday please. How can you help? ● Encourage your child to do their best and participate in a variety of sports and activities. ● Encourage personal fitness by means of outdoor games and exercise. ● Encourage sportsmanship and accepting of other peers abilities. ● Model positive lifestyle habits by balancing work, fitness and recreation times. ● ​Share your interests and talents related to sport.

Home Learning Students in Year Five are expected to spend ​30 minutes four times per week undertaking Home Learning Tasks which are meaningful and relevant to learning in the classroom. These will include: ● ● ● ●

Independent Reading (20 min) – to be recorded in their Home Reading Log English and Mathematics tasks Incomplete work Preparation for assignments - collection of resources, print images, etc.

Due to Year Five using the iPads, students will receive their home learning activities via their Google folder. Home Learning will be set on Monday and due Friday (marked on the following Monday).

Digital Citizenship The iPad is a valuable learning tool and one that greatly enhances, supports and challenges the learning within the classroom. Students are constantly reminded of the expectations and rules around technology and how to evaluate, manage and use the information they find online. It is vitally important for students to be good digital citizens and behave safely and responsibly online.
