K-8 PHYSICAL EDUCATION CURRICULUM FOR PACELLI CATHOLIC SCHOOLS October 2015

PHILOSOPHY Physical Education is unique in that it reaches educational objectives primarily through physical activity. Physical education is an integral part of the total education program. As such, it must seek to contribute to the overall goals of the educational program of the Pacelli Catholic Schools. The curriculum will educate and give opportunities for students to become physically fit and have a mind-set that values physical activity, and its benefits in sustaining a healthy lifestyle.

1 – Physical Education

WE BELIEVE: 

Physical education should help students to build physical fitness, a broad variety of psychomotor skills, acquire a body of knowledge about physical activity and its components, and develop desirable attitudes and behaviors.

The various body systems grow, develop and function best when they are exercised regularly and appropriately. This is true at all stages of life for all people.

The content of Physical Education should be selected specifically to satisfy selected goals, objectives and outcomes. The sequence of instruction should be planned according to individual needs and development of students.

Both learning theory and physiology of exercise confirm the necessity for the scheduling of regular, frequent physical education classes.

That while physical education and interscholastic and intramurals often include the same or similar activities, their program objectives are quite different. Neither program should be substituted for the other.

Physical education students, programs and instruction should be evaluated regularly to determine whether objectives are being met.

2 – Physical Education

GOALS

All students will: ● Develop and maintain a high level of physical fitness ● Develop a variety of psychomotor skills ● Develop a knowledge and understanding of Physical Education ● Develop positive attitudes and behaviors ● Realize the importance of their Godgiven gift of life

STATEMENT Physical Education is taught in progression and each grade level hinges on prior skills that have been introduced and developed. With that being said, the Junior High is a refinement of skills and the introduction of the use of multiple skills and complex activities.

3 – Physical Education

RECOMMENDATIONS

A greater level of understanding of participatory sports will be reached as the students pass through each grade level. Sportsmanship will be an integral part of physical education. Physical activity and wellness for life will be stressed and encouraged throughout the school day and outside of school. Staff will provide opportunity for all students to be engaged in physical activity. Staff resources and staff development opportunities should be consistent at all RCS schools. Staff should be proactive in recognizing and referring students with health risks.

EVALUATIVE SUGGESTIONS

A list of assessments for skill development is included at each grade level. Classroom teachers are encouraged to assist the Physical Education teacher in observing concern areas.
