1. Square Root Method ⇒  isolate the x2 ⇒  take the square root of both sides  Examples: 1)  x2 = 25

2)  x2 = 81

3)  x2 = 96

4)  x2 = ­12

5)  12x2 ­ 60 = 0

                                 6)  3x2 ­ 48 = 0

2.  Solve by Factoring

a.  x2 + 6x + 9 = 0

b.  x2 + 2x = 35

c.  z2 = 9

d.  2x2 ­ 6x = 36

e.  4x2 ­ 28x + 49 = 0

f.  5x2 + 4x ­ 3 = 0

Steps:  1.  Set = 0    

2.  Factor

   

3.  Set each factor with a variable = 0 using the Zero   Product Property

   

4.  Solve for each solution

Use the discriminant to determine the number of solutions.  Then  solve by using the quadratic formula: a.  x2­12x = 28

               b.  x2+22x+121

c. 2x2+4x­5=0 

               d.  x2 ­ 4x = ­13

3. Quadratic Formula

Form ax2 + bx + c = 0  (must be set = to zero!!!!) Use to solve any quadratic x = 

a ≠ 0 b2-4ac is called the discriminant if  b2­4ac > 0 then two real solutions b2­4ac = 0 then one real solution    b2­4ac < 0 then two imaginary solutions

d.  x2 ­ 4x = ­13

b.   x2+22x+121=0

Problem #1 on Homework.  Follow same procedure as the ones that have only an x­squared.  First, get the squared part alone.   Then take square 

 

root.  Then add/subt the other number to the other side to finish solving.
