Dublin City Schools: Frequently Asked Questions What is a Charter System? In 2007, Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle introduced the concept of Charter Systems – entire school districts with total freedom and flexibility – to establish a complete system of choice for students and families. Using accountability contracts designed at the local level, Charter Systems have proven it is possible to offer students new educational opportunities, allowing them to fully achieve their individual potential. Today, nearly 30% of Georgia’s students are enrolled in 42 Charter Systems across our state. At Dublin City Schools, our charter status enables us much greater flexibility when it comes to meeting the needs of our students. As a charter system, Dublin City Schools can hire highly qualified members from various private sectors to teach classes in their field of expertise. Initiatives like our health credit program for incoming ninth graders, or Microsoft Office Certifications for eighth graders, allow students to accumulate high school credits prior to entering DHS, giving them the opportunity to pursue more meaningful areas of study. What are "themed" schools? Dublin City Schools offers true choice for parents and students in the form of two themed elementary schools. These schools build upon core curriculum areas with specific learning paths: Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) at Susie Dasher Elementary and Leadership, Environmental Awareness and Public service (LEAP at Hillcrest Elementary. These themes and school choice options have been touted by many people, including Congressman Rick Allen. Here’s a link for his thoughts on choice and themes: https://www.gop.gov/proudly-support-school-choice/ What is STEAM? STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math. This style of learning is one of the hottest trends in education, and it is because it allows students to connect curriculum to real-world applications. STEAM education encourages investigation and exploration in hopes of helping students to beginning the process of discovering possible career interests. Why is a Fifth Grade Academy located at Dublin Middle School? In 2015, Dublin City Schools began a reconfiguration process in hopes of creating environments for successful student outcomes. Following a thorough investigation, including touring two similar academies in Stephens and Elbert counties, Dublin City Schools integrated all fifth grade students into Dublin Middle School. Through its first year, the academy has been a rousing success. But don’t take our word for it. Follow this link to watch a testimonial video about the academy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5pDHM5vQ4D8&feature=youtu.be How does dual enrollment work?
