Dear GSOC Coordinators and Organizers, We are some students who participated in Gsoc and submitted our proposals to “Orange data mining tool “ organization. We worked really hard in making our proposals also at the same time we made few contributions in codebases of Orange through Github. We did make a detailed discussion with our mentors about our proposals ideas and solved all the questions raised by our mentors about our proposals. During proposal submission period our mentors loved our proposals that we made from our hard work and passion. But now after the announcement of results what we are seeing is that not a single student who participated in Orange group chats for discussion about the proposals and regularly active in the group got selected. Rather some new students who never ever seen on the group before got selected for projects. All the successful students whose proposal got accepted are either students of University of Ljubljana or somehow have connection with them. These students never asked a single question to mentors about their proposals and didn’t make a single contribution towards Orange codebases(except one). Here is detailed proof about these students proving that they have some connections with University of Ljubljana. 1) Primož Godec:- Educational Series

2)

Sašo Stanovnik:- orange.data.table to pandas migration

3)

Salva Carrión:-Recommender System https://goo.gl/7k3D0u

4)

 Matevž Kren:- Rule Induction (CN2)

https://si.linkedin.com/in/matev%C5%BE-kren-5438b421 5) Alexey Suharevich:- Text Mining Add on https://github.com/s-alexey

We don’t have much information about him/her but this student has a good

contribution records towards Orange database. Although he/she never participated in discussion for making proposal.

How it is possible that someone who never participated in discussion for proposal making & didn’t ask a single query about project ideas , got selected for projects. Here is the link for google group of Orange Organization they made for discussion about project proposal. https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/orange-gsoc

Also few of these students haven’t made a single contributions towards codebases of orange yet got selected Primož Godec (https://github.com/PrimozGodec), Sašo Stanovnik( https://github.com/sstanovnik?tab=contributions&from=2016-02-10) There is no basis for selecting these students who never made a single contributions towards Orange codebases and also didn’t participated in discussion for making proposal. Furthermore when we looked into old records we came to know that in last two previous participations of GSOC by Orange organization they did the same thing and accepted most of student from their own university. If something like this is keep going to be happen then most deserving and talented student will lost their interest towards Open source and GSOC and this will raise a strong question upon the validity and transparency of Open source community. Overall we want to say that incidents like this is degrading the quality of GSOC competition and it is the responsibility of GSOC organization that it should take some honest action towards these issue. Kindly make honest investigation of the issue and make the validity of results more transparent. Regards, Gsoc-Orange Participants
