THANKSGIVING DINNER WAS A SUCCESS! THIS IS A SPECIAL TRADITION AT RANDOLPH! ONE WE GREATLY ENJOY! THANK YOU FOR MAKING IT POSSIBLE!

PRINCIPAL- KAREN WILLIAMS [email protected]

RANDOPLH ELEMENTARY *1400 SW RANDOLPH* TOPEKA, KANSAS 66604 * 785-438-4480

From Principal Williams:

What a beautiful November we have had! It has been a gorgeous fall! Now, the weather is starting to get a bit chilly. It is time be sure to have coats, hats, and gloves for recess time and walk and talk each day. If the wind chill is above 20 degrees, we will be going outside. Outdoor play is important to our students’ development. Thank you for making sure that they are bundled up. I know from experience that those gloves and hats are hard to keep track of, one idea is to keep the hats and gloves in the sleeve of your coat when you hang it on the hook, so that they are all together. Also, students, remember not to share hats, or coats. Please remember that there is no supervision provided for students until 8:10 AM. Please do not drop your children off at school before this time. At 8:10 students who are eating breakfast can go to breakfast and walk and talk begins. Students go to class at 8:35. It is time for Mid-year progress monitoring Student will be taking the Scanton assessments in December/

January. These assessments help us to determine future interventions for our students and evaluate our program and instruction to ensure the success of our students. We are looking forward to seeing the progress out students have made this year.

Common T-Shirts for All Students Dear Raiders, For the last several years the Randolph Leadership team has discussed the desire for our staff and students to have a common T-shirt that all students have that we could all wear on certain days to promote unity and school spirit. We hope this is an affordable option that all students can afford and will purchase. This is not a fundraiser. In fact, we have some donors who are willing to purchase shirts for students who are not able to purchase them. The form is attached; we encourage you to purchase this shirt for school spirit. As always, thank you for your support of our students and Randolph.

Thank you so much for thinking of teachers and their families at Thanksgiving time with the wonderful desserts. As we have been talking about Randolph's 90 years of existence and our traditions, I wonder when this great one was started. Thank you again! Gayla Hoyt, PTO Representative and the Randolph Staff

Sincerely, Randolph Leadership Team

Library Information William Allen White Books in the Library I am reviewing the William Allen White booklist that Kansas students in grades 3-5 read and vote for in March. The book called The Amazing Age of John Roy Lynch is a biography. John Roy Lynch started life as a slave and ended up being elected into the United States Congress. He lived during and after the Civil War where he saw the unfair treatment of black people in his home state of Mississippi. It shows what one person can do even when the odds are against them. Randolph PTO PTO has been busy this fall! A huge thank you to the families that sent in cookies and treats for the Thanksgiving lunch and Michelle Durkes for coordinating it all. It was a huge hit once again! A big thank you to Christi Stewart for coordinating and many other parents for providing pies and desserts for our teachers before the Thanksgiving break! With all your help, every staff member was able to take a dessert home with them. We're looking forward to several events coming up and hope you'll join us soon! We have Art Night on Tuesday, December 5th from 68pm. As in years past there will be several items that will be free, with just a few activities that will have a minimal cost. This is always a fun night for the kids and adults and the kids may be able to make a few gifts for Christmas too! Our next PTO meeting will be Monday, December 11th at 6pm. We hope you will join us!

90 Anniversary Celebration Greetings Randolph Families and Friends, As we enter the Holiday season I want to remind everyone of the 90th Anniversary Celebration that we are planning for April 29, 2018. This is a very special event as Randolph is the only grade school in Topeka to have reached 90 years and still be operating as a grade school. I know everyone sees lots of family and friends over the holidays that we don’t always see otherwise and I’d like to ask for your help in spreading the word about our Celebration. We are looking for any alumni of Randolph who might agree to be interviewed by one of our 5th grade students during next semester as part of our project. We would also love to have pictures and memorabilia from every decade in our history to display at the event. If you have a family member or friend who we could contact, please pass their name on to me. I can be reached at (785) 6087117 by calling or texting me. I can also be reached via e-mail at [email protected] Thank you for your help in celebrating this very important milestone in our wonderful Randolph history. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!

On November 9 the kids in PE class were part of a challenge to break a

world record by the Speed Stacks organization. The kids learned the different types of stacks that they do for cup stacking and then they practiced and raced. Cup stacking has turned into a worldwide competition and is even part of the Junior Olympics. They did some free stacking. The classes worked together to build a giant pyramid and had the best time doing it. I have been selling the sets of cups for speed stacking and still have some left. I must return what I have soon so if you would like to purchase some for your child please let me know. Thank you,
