Be strategic about educational choices
Some general advice • Be extraordinary – Everyone has degrees and high marks – Stand out: publish, volunteer, do independent research, get a part-time job, take extra classes
• Educate yourself – Don’t rely on your program to educate you; go to extra classes; attend advertised seminars; take advantage of your university
• Keep track – Of everything you do; update your CV regularly
• Learn how to network – Almost all opportunities come from networking; there’s a right way and wrong way

• Our globe is undergoing unprecedented economic change • I don’t think our part of the world will regain its prosperity in our lifetimes • Competition for jobs is stiffer than ever • Overall wealth may be declining in your generation • External threats (climate change, energy crisis, etc) are beyond your control
• You are among the handful of lucky few among the world’s 7 billion people • You live in a country that offers you the opportunity to be extraordinary if you take up the challenge • There are things you can start doing NOW to make yourself more marketable in the future
