Rosen As the digital age is so new and ever-changing, we parents fumble along, hoping to give helpful guidance to our kids about situations we, frankly, never had to deal with (group texting, sexting, pop up ads, 24/7 cell availability, etc etc). This book is fantastic. Filled with anecdotes, research and facts, it gives great guidance and suggestions on how best to help our kids navigate these unchartered waters. The writing is clear, the chapters well organized. The overall message: "Do not be afraid of this technology, it has so many benefits and is here to stay. Bissell All of us raising kids in the digital age find ourselves grappling with questions about media exposure and usage... how much is too much? Are there "good" media and "bad" media? Is there something wrong with letting your kids hang out with their friends to play video games for hours on end? These questions seem especially difficult in the face of very different choices made by other parents, including parents of your kids' friends, meaning you will only have limited control over their media exposure anyway. This book was easy to read and touched on just about every issue that I could think of related to raising kids in the digital age. Most issues have no definitive answer, but it was incredibly helpful to learn more about we know at this point, and to see that media exposure, like everything in life, is not intrinsically problematic or worrisome, but is just another issue that deserves some scrutiny, open conversation, and work to achieve balance. After reading the book, I found my perspective shifting so that I was thinking about media engagement as something akin to eating. Clearly, we need to eat, and too much eating is bad for you, but mostly we enjoy what we eat and we strive for balanced meals. The book has helpful summary points and tips after each chapter, so while it can read right through, it also serves as a useful quick reference if you find yourself grappling with a new issue. I would definitely recommend this book to any parent and expect to revisit many of the sections as my kids age and the questions change.

Uhls has dedicated her entire career to media, first as a storyteller at movie studies such as MGM and Sony, and currently as a research expert on kids and media. Dr. Uhls, a child psychologist scientist, works with schools, non-profits, and companies. Her understanding of the academic literature along with her many years of senior management experience in the entertainment industry allows her a unique and relevant perspective, steeped in an understanding of the business world. She is passionate about translating science into useful knowledge and takeaways for parents, organizations and educators. Her position is balanced, based in fact and relevant to those concerned with using media in realistic and positive ways to shape youth development. In addition to her consulting and other work, Dr. Uhls works with Common Sense Media, a national non-profit, as their Director of Creative Community Partnerships and does research with UCLA. Companies that have sought out her expertise include Google LA, Henson Pictures, Disney Channel and Hewlett Packard. Dr Uhls's research focuses on how older and newer media impacts the social behavior of preadolescents. Notable awards include UCLA's Psychology In Action Award, for excellence in communicating psychological research to audiences beyond academia and the Society for Research in Child Development's Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation. Prior to her academic career, Yalda spent over fifteen years as a senior entertainment executive and producer. She holds an MBA, and a PhD in developmental psychology, from UCLA.
