Unit 4 (Draft):Grade 6 Social Studies Ancient Egypt/Ancient Greece Scroll: Shaped By Water, Shaped By History Comparative Analysis In Poetry and Conversation Goal: Research and compare geographic and other features of ancient Egypt and ancient Greek civilizations for creating a scroll of a written poem or conversation between two voices: “Shaped By Water, Shaped By History”. Role: You are working with a team of geographers, archaeologist, anthropologists and artists, to research and create a scroll of a poem / conversation that compares and analyses features of ancient Egypt and ancient Greece. Audience: A live audience that will listen to and read the scroll: “A Poem /Conversation for Two Voices Shaped By Water, Shaped By History”. Situation: You will research, analyze, and compare and contrast the geography and at least two additional features of ancient Egyptian and ancient Greek civilizations for the comparative poem / conversation: “Historical Adventures: Shaped By Water, Shaped By History”. Your audience is interested in understanding the similarities and differences between the geography, agriculture, trade, religion, and innovations of Ancient Greece and Ancient Egypt. Using specific questions, you will research, respond to and compare information from these civilizations in order to include in your poem / conversation historically accurate comparisons. Product and Standards for Success: You need to research and write on a scroll a thesis-based two-voice poem or conversation about the development, characteristics, and impact that compared the geography of ancient Egypt and ancient Greece, and at least two additional features of Egyptian and Greek civilizations. Your poem or conversation needs to include: (see following page for Guiding Questions for each section) o An introduction line with a hook, background on your topic, and a thesis statement at the beginning of your poem or conversation o An explanation response that compares the geographic characteristics of your feature with evidence and inferences o An explanation of the modern-day impact of your feature, from your perspective o A conclusion response that restates your thesis and pushes your audience’s thinking about these topics.

Ancient Egypt/Ancient Greece Scroll: Shaped By Water, Shaped By History Comparative Analysis In Poem For Two Voices or Conversation Grade 6 Social Studies You will need to research and answer in poem or conversation format the three thesis statements below. Each thesis statement contains an EVIDENCE and ANALYSIS piece. This means that you will collect text and visual evidence with citations for the EVIDENCE questions, and use your own critical thinking to answer the ANALYZE questions. You will write the poem/conversation on a scroll. Must Haves: The Five Themes of Geography: Geography: Compare and contrast the geographic features of each civilization to understand how the geography of each influenced the rise and evolution of each of the civilizations: Ancient Egypt, Ancient Athens, Sparta. 1.  EVIDENCE:  What  was  the  relative  and  specific  Location  of  each  of  the  civilizations  and  how  did  location  influence  the   rise  and  evolution  of  each?      ANALYZE:  How  were  these  features  similar  and  different,  and  what  was  the  impact  of  Location  on  the  rise  and   evolution  of  each  civilization? 2.  EVIDENCE:  What  are  the  physical  and  human  features  of  each  Place  -­‐ancient  Egypt  and  ancient  Greece?          ANALYZE:  How  are  the  physical  and  human  features  of  each  place  alike  and  different? 3.  EVIDENCE:  In  what  ways  did  Human-­Environment  Interaction  affect  the  development  of  each  of  the  civilizations?        ANALYZE:  How  was  Human-­Environment  interaction  similar  and  different  in  these  civilizations? 4.  EVIDENCE:  Which  features  describe  the  Region  of  each  of  these  civilizations  and  how  did  those  features  influence                      each  civilization?        ANALYZE:  How  are  those  influences  similar  and  different? 5.  EVIDENCE:  What  kinds  of  Movement  of  people,  goods  and  ideas  were  present  in  each  civilization?        ANALYZE:  How  can  the  differences  and  similarities  of  Movement  among  these  civilizations  be  explained?

TRADE: Compare/contrast the development, characteristics, and impact of Ancient Greek and Egyptian trade.  1.  EVIDENCE:  What  led  to  the  development  of  trade  in  each  of  these  civilizations?                ANALYZE:  How  was  the  development  similar  and  different?      2.  EVIDENCE:  What  were  the  characteristics  (trade  items,  way  of  travel,  partners,  etc.)  of  each  civilization’s  trade?                ANALYZE:  How  were  these  characteristics  similar  and  different?        3.  EVIDENCE:  In  what  ways  do  we  still  see  these  impacts  today?                ANALYZE:  How  are  these  impacts  similar  and  different? RELIGION: Compare/contrast the development, characteristics, and impact of Ancient Greek and Egyptian religion.    1.  EVIDENCE:  What  led  to  the  development  of  religion  in  each  of  these  civilizations?                ANALYZE:  How  was  the  development  similar  and  different?        2.  EVIDENCE:  What  were  the  characteristics  (core  beliefs,  rituals,  practices,  etc.)  of  each  civilization’s  religions?                              ANALYZE:  How  were  these  characteristics  similar  and  different?        3.  EVIDENCE:  In  what  ways  do  we  still  see  these  impacts  today?              ANALYZE:  How  are  these  impacts  similar  and  different? This includes first, second and third person voice, academic/formal language, and transitions. Your final version will be written on a scroll in a poem-for-two-voices format or conversation between two civilizations format and convey your research, analysis and understanding of this comparison and the how each civilization was shaped by its geography and history.
