DECEMBER 2017

Attendance During December is Important! December can be a busy month. With the holidays just around the corner, families are busy with shopping, parties, special events and even travel plans. It may be tempting to take your child out of school, but if you do, your child will miss out on valuable learning opportunities. Try these tips to manage the holiday rush and still keep your child in school: Get a big calendar. Write all your family activities on it. Be sure to include school events and test days. Avoid over-committing your child. Stick to a regular schedule. If you allow your child to stay up later on school nights, getting to school on time the next day may be more difficult. Schedule study time before activities. Extra activities may leave your child too tired to do homework. And kids who haven’t finished their homework are less likely to want to go to school. Be firm. Your child and even family members may say it won’t matter if your child misses a day of school. Don’t give in. Say you value education and take the responsibility of making sure your child is in school every day seriously. Work with the teacher if you cannot avoid having your child miss a day of school.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM PRIMARY SCHOOL ADJUSTMENT PROJECT (PSAP) As the end of our first semester quickly approaches, we would like to thank all of our PSAP students, parents, teachers and our counselor, Ms. Elias, who continue to work as team in an effort to meet adjustment needs. We are especially grateful to our parents who have attended our intake meetings to assist in planning the goals, objectives, and activities for their child’s success. Over the winter break, don’t forget to slow down and allow time for spontaneous, free play-whether it’s chasing butterflies, lying down on a blanket outside looking for shapes in the clouds, playing with “true toys” like blocks and dolls, or just romping on the floor with mom and dad. One of the best gifts you can give your child is your time and attention, letting your child direct the play. The American Academy of Pediatrics says that what children really need for healthy development is more of good, oldfashioned playtime. Many parents load their children’s schedules with organized sports, enrichment activities, and lots of classes in a drive to help them excel. Numerous studies have shown that unstructured play has many benefits. It can help children become creative, discover their own passions, develop problem-solving skills, relate to others, and adjust to school settings. A good player is a good learner! Above all, play is a simple joy that is a cherished part of childhood. From our PSAP family to yours, we wish you all a safe, healthy, and playful holiday season. Sincerely, Kathleen Matsuda and Claudia Bartlett PSAP Counseling Aides

Healthy Snacks at Wilcox Elementary School At Wilcox Elementary School we believe that schools play an important role in educating students about healthy behaviors. Healthy behaviors not only promote healthier lifestyles, but also have a positive effect on student achievement and learning. For this reason, we encourage water and healthy snacks for students. Some examples of healthy snacks include: All FRESH fruits and vegetables- such as bananas, apples, strawberries, grapes, carrots and celery sticks. Preserved Fruit- such as raisins, fruit leather, applesauce and fruit cups. Beware of advertised "fruit snacks" usually contain no fruit and are primarily sugar - check labels. Other snack options also include whole grain cereals and crackers, rice cakes, popcorn, baked chips, pretzels and trail mix. Dairy products such as low sugar yogurt and cheese.
