Annual Production Sale March 28, 2018 LaCrosse Livestock Market LaCrosse, KS
www . diamondhcattle . org
FRIENDS AND FELLOW CATTLEMEN Welcome to our Annual Production Sale! First and foremost, we can’t express our gratitude enough to the customers who have supported us for the last 12 years. The greatest satisfaction we have as breeders is returning customers with smiles on their faces. The relationships we have made (and hopefully continue to make) will always be priority number one for us. When our customers are successful, it only makes this job that much more rewarding. Here at the Dimaond H, like most years, we have some wins and some losses. The beauty of this lifestyle is that you not only get to watch your herd grow and change, but your family seems to grow and change with it. The Good Lord has blessed us, yet again, with baby number four due to arrive in May. I am usually not the guy to slow down long enough to smell the roses, but one of the best days here at the ranch was watching our oldest two daughters (Aly and Graycee) move cattle horseback while grinning from ear to ear! Their roles continue to increase as key members of the operation. Little Brynn is never far behind them and her passion for life keeps all of us on our toes. Last but not least, my wonderful wife, Jade, continues to be the glue of the entire operation and of our family. Her unwavering consistency keeps me grounded when I have a tendency to get ahead of myself. With the close of 2017 and the beginning of 2018, our job as ranchers continues to have its share of challenges and crucial management decisions. In our continuing pursuit to be the best Seed Stock Producers that we can be, we too feel the pressures that exist in our current markets and environments. As always, we try to assemble a well-balanced offering as best as we can to accommodate the various needs of our customers. In this year’s offering, we will have several sire groups that have continued to be consistent inside of our operation. The Maverick sired calves have not regressed from last year’s first offering. His first set of daughters that we recently calved out hit 80% conception by AI and expressed very good maternal traits through some rather adverse conditions. I look forward to watching his daughters grow into matriarchs of our herd. The newest member to the sire group is Leland Stakeholder. These calves number up really well and express a very eye appealing phenotype that comes from a strong maternal line with above adequate performance. This sire also possesses very strong carcass qualities. The last couple of sires, Rebel and Strategy, have been a part of several offerings and we feel that these are some of the best ones we’ve raised. There are several Strategy sons that I will reference throughout the catalog that excelled in their contemporary groups. We have retained both Rebel and Strategy females inside of our operation and have continued to be very pleased with their ability to make a living for us. In closing, we would like to thank all of you for taking an interest in our program. If at any time you have questions or would like to take a look at our cattle, please feel free to call. We would also like to thank our family who is always there to help and support us, Trent Mauler (one of our cooperators) who’s help and insight is always appreciated, Nathan Schippers (our friend and neighbor) who happens to always show up when we need a hand, and to those who have guided and helped us over the years…we send out the most heartfelt appreciation to you all as we would not be where we are today without you! God Bless, Justin and Jade

The impact of new sires is far longer than we usually consider. If they are still breeding cows in five seasons, the last calves will come in 2023. That means you should still have plenty of daughters into the mid 2030s! With that long term impact on your cow herd and industry changes that mean more dollars for genetically better calves, can anyone really afford to take chances? Use IGS EPDs to guarantee value! They are third party verified and backed by data from millions of individuals and the best in DNA genomic technology in the business. You wouldn’t buy any other ranch input without solid proof of value. Genetics might be your most important investment. Buy where you see the Allied logo and get the profit based genetics that you deserve.

AVERAGES TO KEEP IN MIND In addition to phenotypic evaluations, we use numbers to measure our cattle in various ways (like most operations). In reference to that, here are a few statistics about our cattle throughout the past year: ♦ Our cowherd had a 96% conception rate through the 2017 breeding season (71% conceived by AI) ♦ Our replacement heifers had a 94% conception rate this calving season (80% conceived by AI) A small glimpse of the EPD averages below shows the results of our 2017 calf crop data. With BW in the top 15% of the breed, MARB in the top 30% of the breed, API in the top 25% of the breed and TI in the top 40% of the breed...even the average calf is excelling within the industry. $ INDEXES · WHAT ARE API AND TI? $ Indexes Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ Indexes come in. Through well conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ Indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ Indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
Using API and TI First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements, use API...if not, then use TI. Just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls (as described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed). The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a +50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ Indexes visit www.simmental.org.
UNDERSTANDING EPDs Expected Progeny Difference (EPD) — The difference in expected performance of future progeny of an individual, compared with expected performance of future prog- eny of an individual of average genetic merit in the base time frame for the genetic evaluation. EPDs are estimated from phenotypic merit of an individual and all of its relatives and are estimates of one-half the breeding values. EPDs are generally reported in units of measurement for the trait. Average Daily Gain (ADG) — Measurement of daily body weight change over a specified period of time of an animal on a feed test. Back Fat Thickness (BF) — Estimates the average differences that are expected in fat thickness at the 12th and 13th rib between progeny of different animals. Birth Weight (BW) — The weight of a calf taken within 24 hours after birth (reported in pounds). The EPD value predicts the difference in average birth weight of a bull’s progeny compared to progeny of all other bulls evaluated. A positive value indicates heavier-than-average birth weights while a negative value indicates lighter-than-average birth weights. Calving Ease (CE) — The ease with which a bull’s calves are born to first calf heifers. When comparing calving ease EPDs of two sires, the larger EPD indicates a higher percent of unassisted births for calves sired by this bull. Carcass Weight (CW) — The EPD predicts the difference in average carcass weight of a bull’s progeny compared to progeny of all other bulls evaluated. A positive number indicates heavier-than-aveage carcass weights while a negative value indicates lower-than-average carcass weights. Frame Score (FRAME) — A score based on subjective evaluation of height or actual measurement of hip height. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE) — Percent of unassisted births in first calving daughters. Marbling Score (MARB) — A subjective evaluation of the amount and distribution of intramuscular fat. The EPD value predicts the difference in average marbling score of a bull’s progeny compared to progeny of all other evaluated bulls. A positive value indicates higher-than-average marbling scores while a negative value indicates lower-than-average marbling scores. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW) — The weaning weight of a bull’s daughters’ calves. The EPD value predicts the difference in average 205-day weight of a bull’s daughters’ calves compared to daughters of all other bulls evaluated. A positive value indicates heavier-than-average weaning weights while a negative value indicates lighter-than-average weaning weights.
Milk (MILK) — The milking ability of a bull’s daughter. The EPD value predicts the difference (due to milking ability) in average 205-day weight of a bull’s daughters’ calves compared to calves of all other bulls evaluated. Positive values indicate above average milking ability of daughters while negative values indicate below average milking ability. Most Probable Producing Ability (MPPA) — An estimate of a cow’s future productivity for a trait (such as progeny weaning weight ratio) based on her past productivity. For example, a cow’s MPPA for weaning ratio is calculated from the cow’s average progeny weaning ratio, the number of her progeny with weaning record, and the repeatability of weaning weight. Ribeye Area (REA) — The average difference in ribeye area in an animal’s progeny when compared to the progeny of another animal at a given age endpoint. Scrotal Circumference (SCROTAL) — A measure of testes size obtained by measuring the distance around the testicles in the scrotum with a circular tape. Stayability (STAY) — The expected difference, in percentage probability, that a bull’s daughters will remain in the herd until at least six years of age. Weaning Weight (WW) — Calf weight taken between 160 and 250 days of age and adjusted to 205 days of age and a mature dam equivalent (reported in pounds). The EPD value predicts the difference in average 205-day weight of a bull’s progeny compared to progeny of all other bulls evaluated. A positive value indicates heavier-than-average weaning weights while a negative value indicates lighter-than-average weaning weights. Yield Grade (YG) — Predicts differences in USDA Yield Grade score. This EPD is calculated using the genetic predictions of CW, REA, and BF EPDs. Yearling Weight (YW) — Weight taken between 330 and 440 days of age and adjusted to 365 days of age and a mature dam equivalent (reported in pounds). The EPD value predicts the difference in average 365-day weight of a bull’s progeny compared to progeny of all other bull’s evaluated. A positive value indicates heavier-than-average yearling weights while a negative value indicates lighter-than-average yearling weights.

Maverick was the high selling bull in the 2015 C Diamond/Wilkinson Bull Sale. His unique pedigree provides a very proven maternal line in the Simmental breed and has just the right amount of performance to keep cattle efficient and relatively moderate. His disposition is five star and his offspring express this as well. His granddam is arguably one of the best red Simmental cows in the country…look to his progeny to increase maternal genetics and maintain performance. Semen is available through Allied Genetic Resources.

Schuler Strategy 3343A has been one of the most consistent bulls we have ever owned. We originally purchased him as a heifer bull, but soon realized that there was much more to this herd sire than calving ease. Over the past several years, the calves have sold well and we feel that this might be the best set we have raised out of him. His strong EPD profile is extremely accurate due to the number of progeny he has sired. This will be the last of his sons and daughters to sell as we lost Strategy this past year. Don’t miss your chance to own one of his great sons or daughters!

Stakeholder was the second high selling bull in the 2016 Leland Red Angus Bull Sale (he sat second to his half brother that year). We have been very pleased with his first calf crop. This sire has a considerable amount of performance and maternal traits in his pedigree being that he is in the top 21% in WW, the top 13% in YW and below breed average for BW and CE. Take a look at his HB, GM, MILK, HPG, STAY, CW, MARB, API AND TI EPDs. He excels well above average in over 50% of the EPD categories. His calves will bring a positive movement upward in growth, carcass and maternal traits. Overall, he is a very well-balanced sire.

We have used Rebel repeatedly throughout the years and have been consistently pleased. His calving ease is always appreciated and the daughters we have retained are already making their mark inside the operation. Throughout the catalog you will see Rebel daughters as the dams of both bulls and heifers. I really appreciate these cattle because they are the kind that requires very little attention. From calving to grazing season, all the way through feeding…they just get it done.

Lot 1 is one of our favorite F1 calves from the 2017 calf crop. He excelled in his contemporary groups in multiple categories and has a very balanced EPD profile. This young sire will continue to keep performance moving in a positive direction while keeping calving ease and mature size in check. His dam has made her mark in our herd for many years and as you will see...she is the granddam to Lot 2. While maintaining the performance needed for calves sold by the pound, I would definitely keep an eye on his daughters for potential replacements as he is stacked on both sides of his pedigree for maternal genetics.

Lot 2 walked away from his pen mates in all aspects associated with growth. As a product from a planned cross breeding program, he comes out of a first calf heifer who did her job very well. Not only was he born at 76lbs, he grew very well pre and post weaning. His EPD profile exhibits his strength as a bull that should make some very nice feeder cattle, but he is also in the top 15% of the breed for API which exhibits his ability to be used as a herd builder type bull. I referenced his sire, Schuler Strategy 3343A, in the sire summary regarding how this might be his best set of calves we have raised to date...this is just one of those examples.

This lighter red Strategy son, DHCC Strategy 777E, is very clean around the front and smooth shouldered. He has all the makings for a calving ease sire and will not be so short on growth that his calves won’t fit the rest of your calf crop come sale time. He is in th top 1% in BW and 5% for CE. He also ranks high in MARB and API. He should be a great fit for some fresh heifers and would work as a heifer bull on the commercial heifers offered in this sale.

Lot 4 comes out of one of the most consistent cows we have. While always maintaining efficiency, she is still in production on our ranch and being 11 years old...she shows no signs of heading to the cull pen at this time. Being the first Stakeholder son to sell in the offering, this moderately framed bull is very well-balanced and thick made. For use on cows; I expect his calves to keep the ranch in the black. His half-brother was Lot 1 in last year’s sale and was purchased by a neighbor to use on some F1 cows. He has been very pleased with his offspring and the disposition is excellent. This young sire also exhibits many of those same characteristics.
♦ 5
This high percentage Red Angus bull, DHCC Yield Grade 776E, is the first WFL Yield Grade 164A son to sell. He has a thick top, is deep bodied and carries a smooth shoulder. We have used Yield Grade as a clean-up bull on our heifers for a number of years and have always gotten along very well with his progeny. His dam is a ¾ Strategy daughter who I expect to continue to make her mark at our ranch. At a 68lb BW and 1105lb YW out of a first calf heifer shows that this sire has the ability to calve easy and grow.

Lot 6 is a very eye appealing ¾ Red Angus Stakeholder son. He carries himself on a great foot and his disposition is five star. For use on cows; his performance numbers do not lie. If you are needing to add some pounds to the calf crop that will grade well, this is your bull. His F1 Beefmaker dam has always managed to wean off very solid calves for us and he is just another example of that. The Beefmaker females continue to be one of our favorite female lines that we have ever owned as they do numerous things great within our herd.

Lot 7 is a very well-balanced SimAngus Strategy son who stands out in the pen. For use on cows; this yearling bull should continue moving your herd in a positive direction.

Lot 8 is a 1B Red Angus bull who comes from one of our up and coming top females. DHCC Hondo B418 is a dark, cherry red who is extremely deep bodied and moderately framed. Her first calf last year sold early in our sale to a very pleased customer and this bull exhibits the same characteristics. His AI sire, Schuler Rebel 0029X, needs no introduction and I would not be surprised if he sires a good number of replacement type females.

Lot 10 is a ½ blood CDI Maverick 335B son who is thick and stout. I talk highly on Maverick’s maternal traits and disposition, but DHCC Maverick 785E comes from a female that has been very consistent throughout her time at our ranch. His previous full and half brothers have always sold well and went on to more than satisfied customers. This bull would work great on a set of Red Angus cows to add some hybrid vigor to your calf crop.

DHCC Rebel 790E is a purebred Red Angus bull out of Schuler Rebel A698, a Schuler Rebel 0029X son that we previously owned. He comes from a pretty powerful Schuler Red Angus female. His Commitment dam is a middle aged cow who always exemplifies consistency no matter how we have bred her. For use on cows; this bull has lineage in his pedigree that will maintain calving ease and provide you with some very nice replacement females.

DHCC Stakeholder 780E is a low birth weight, high percentage Red Angus Stakeholder son. His dam is showing her age at 13 years, but she has raised some of our high selling bulls in our previous offerings. In the 13 years on the ranch, she has never been open and I am not surprised that she calved out another 68lb bull calf this spring.

DHCC Rebel 757E is a solid Rebel SimAngus bull that really excels in the maternal categories. His granddam on the bottom side is as solid as they come and this is just another offspring that has her in the pedigree. This sire will provide solid calving ease and maintain growth with much potential for replacements.

Lot 45 starts off the registered heifers as a very well made, deep bodied, thick topped, ½ blood female. Her sire was known for his ability to sire high carcass traits in his offspring. Her granddam has been an amazing cow for us for the last 10 years and is still going strong. Norseman King needs no introduction as his daughters are all over the country making producers money. You won’t miss her in the pen.

DHCC Stakeholder E718 is a 1A Stakeholder daughter and happens to be one that is hard for me to let go of. She has a very proven granddam and I am not surprised that her dam, DHCC Hondo B404, truned out a daughter like this. She has a very solid EPD profile and an excellent disposition. She will do her job for you and allows room for much flexibility in future matings.

Lot 49 is a high percentage Red Angus female and has one of the most consistent females in our herd as a dam. She has never missed an opportunity to conceive in 11 years and just calved once again. DHCC Lizzy U807 has had multiple sons and daughters that have always excelled. This heifer is moderatey framed and has a really efficient female look to her.

DHCC Yield Grade E734 is a cross bred female with a very balanced EPD profile. The ¾ females at our ranch as a group have always been the kind of cettle you just don’t worry about. They go out and do their jobs year in and year out. We have always appreciated the fertility and longevity that they bring to the table.

DHCC Stakeholder E720 comes from a great grandsire line on the bottom side. I have really enjoyed watching the Hondo females transition from heifers to cows in our herd. They all have solid phenotypes and always catch your eye when going through the herd. Many of them have produced great cattle at a very young age...as you can see by this heifers top 3% for MILK.

DHCC Yield Grade E736 has both Strategy and Beefmaker in her pedigree. This high percentage Red Angus female is a great combination for calving and growth. By adding Yield Grade to the mix, she looks like a female that should get the job done.

DHCC Yield Grade E735 comes from an excellent grandsire on the bottom side. I have not mentioned how impactful the Beefmaker sire line is in our operation. As you will see in a multitude of pedigrees, there are many daughters left at the ranch. The Beefmaker females have been very solid females and we have personally seen them endure some very trying environmental conditions, from which they always seemed to excel. After owning and using them, it is pretty obvious to see why Beefmaker was the 3rd highest used sire in the history of the Simmental breed.

This young, outstanding FI sire is a product of Maverick and our top donor female, HRAA Romo 733. His sire is represented throughout the catalog and continues to produce consistent, well-balanced calves with exceptional maternal traits. His dam carries an MPPA of 114! She has never missed a breeding opportunity in 11 years and we have never culled any of her offspring. She is the epitome of a great, hard working cow. She is currently in our donor program and is flushing 20-30 embryos every cycle. Semen will be available through Diamond H Ranch. Videos of the cattle can be viewed online at diamondhcattle.org

Diamond H Ranch Production Sale | March 28, 2018 | 12:30pm
COMMERCIAL TWO YEAR OLD PAIRS As referenced in the opening letter, we have a special place in our hearts for Red Angus and Red SimAngus females as they play an extremely important role at our ranch. Over the years, we have often times purchased females from our bull buyers and developed them as replacements. The 35 pairs selling are an example of that; they come from a customer who has recently used our sires. These females are in their working clothes and learning the ropes quickly as mothers. All of the calves at their sides are out of PFFR Convoy 9Z and were born in February. All of the dams are SimAngus makeups between 3/4 AR x 1/4 SM and 1/2 AR X 1/2 SM. The work is done with these ladies!

COMMERCIAL HEIFER GROUPS The Commercial Heifer Groups have all been calf hooded and palpated. The majority of the females come from a selected group off of C&W Ranch. C&W Ranch is a Commercial Red Angus and Red SimAngus operation located in Smolan, KS. These heifers represent the top 60% of their 2017 calf crop. The remaining heifers came from our cooperators, Trent and Chelsea Mauler, located in Great Bend, KS. Many of these heifers carry Simmental in their pedigrees, but nothing past 1/2 AR x 1/2 SM. The use of cross bred females in the commercial cow/calf operation can be a very profitable scenario as we see continued longevity and reproductive efficiencies from these cattle. They do not miss on the performance side of things either. These heifers have been grouped by weight and frame scores, which were taken on 1/30/2018. They will be sold as groups of five. If buyers take all five, they can purchase the next group of five for the same price. If buyers choose to sort through the group, they lose the option on the second group. These heifers are guaranteed open and with a viable reproductive tract.

TERMS & CONDITIONS Terms — Terms of sale are cash unless other satisfactory arrangements have been made. Bidding — All animals sell to the highest bidder. The auctioneer will settle disputes or challenges regarding bids and his decision will be final. Announcements — Announcements from the auction block will take precedence over the information printed in this catalog. Purchaser’s Risk and Insurance — Each animal becomes the risk of the buyer as soon as sold, but it shall be the obligation of the seller to see that the animals are well cared for until possession exchange occurs. Exchange of animal(s) must be made within two weeks of the day of the sale. Insurance of purchase(s) is not provided, but is recommended as transportation is at the risk of the buyer. Options and Privileges of Return or Adjustments — All claims for adjustment or refund must be made in writing within six months of the sale date or no later than six months after the animal reaches 12 months of age. In the event an animal is claimed to be a non-breeder, the animal may be returned to the seller if in good condition and complying with the health requirements of the seller’s stats. The seller shall be entitled to six months of trial after the animal is returned to prove that the animal is a breeder. If at the end of six months the seller is unable to prove that the animal is a breeder, the seller shall, at the option of the buyer, replace the animal with another of equal value or refund the purchase price. The return of the full purchase price shall in any case be deemed full satisfaction and settlement. Any expenses incurred shall be the seller’s responsibility if the animal is found to be a non-breeder.
Trucking — Transportation will be free within 100 miles of the ranch. Any distance over 100 miles shall be the responsibility of the buyer. Identification — Seller offers each animal with a readable tattoo corresponding to its registration. Health — Health assesments have taken place prior to the sale and the necessary health information will be provided based on the buyer’s needs and location. Breeding Soundness — All buyers will receive a Breeding Soundness Evaluation for each bull purchased. Certificate of Registry — All cattle have registration papers (unless otherwise stated) and these will be sent to the Association offices for transfer of ownership to take place. Seller’s Semen Rights — Diamond H Ranch reserves the right to retain 50% semen interest in bulls specifically identified as such in this catalog. This allows Diamond H Ranch to collect, use, and market semen from the bull and does not restrict the purchaser from doing the same. Any collection will be done at Diamond H Ranch’s expense and at the purchaser’s convenience. Rights and Obligations — The above terms and conditions of sale shall constitute a contract between the buyer and seller of each animal and shall be equally binding on both. Animals resold following purchase in this sale shall constitute a separate transaction and the rights and obligations of the parties connected there are not covered by the above terms and conditions of this sale. Neither the owners, auctioneers, nor any other person connected with the management or conduct of this sale assumes any liability, legal or otherwise, except as set forth.
