MPUSD Secondary Course Syllabus Name of School/Year: ​Marina High School 2016­2017  Name of Course: ​Functional Academy   Teacher’s Name:​ Jessica Robe  Room Number​: 24  Phone Number:​(831) 583­2060 ext.3724  Email:​[email protected]    Preparation Period/teacher availability for extra help or conferences:​ I am available before  school (6:30­7:30), during my prep 5th period, and after school, contact me by email with any  questions or concerns.    Course description: ​Students will improve core academic skills, life skills, social skills and  study skills. This instructional setting utilizes individually planned and systematically monitored  arrangement of physical settings, special equipment and materials, teaching procedures, and  other interventions designed to help students with special needs achieve the greatest possible  personal self­sufficiency and success in school and community.  Individual IEP goals will be  addressed during Functional Academy, including speech and language goals. Prerequisite courses/skills needed for this course: ​None  Key essential standards/skills to be mastered in course:  Mastery of the Common Core standards commensurate with the student's grade level through the  modifications or accommodations stipulated within the student IEP. Remedial assignments will  address the fundamental skills outlined in lower grade level Common Core Standards with a  focus on reaching grade level standards. 

  Assessment/Evaluation methods used in this course:​On­going portfolio evaluations  will be used to assess student learning. Standardized assessments agreed upon by the IEP  team will be implemented during triennial revaluations.      

Major Assignments/Examinations­schedule: ​Students will be given daily assignments  predicated on student ability levels designed specifically to support growth towards achievement  on the student’s goals as outlined by the student's IEP. Assignments will vary between whole  class, individual and small group assignments. Due dates will vary based on the magnitude of  assignments. All students will be given sufficient time to complete assignments. 

Curriculum and instructional materials needed for this course: ​Curriculum and  materials utilized in this class include various resources and will be provided to students  by Marina High School.   

District Grading Policy​:  Grades are based upon the mastery of grade and/or course standards in middle and high school  and progress towards meeting standards as measured by the statewide assessment reporting  scale.  Grades shall be reported for every student during each marking period using the District's  established grading scale. (BP/AR #5121)  Proficiency Level Scale Secondary  Advanced Mastery of Grade level 5 (90­100%) A (4.0 grade points)  Proficient Mastery of Grade level 4 (80­89%) B (3.0 grade points)  Basic Mastery of Grade level 3 (70­79%) C (2.0 grade points)  Below Basic Mastery of Grade level 2 (60­69%) D (1.0 grade points)  Far Below Basic Mastery of Grade level 1 (59<%) F (0 grade points)  Incomplete 0.5 (22%) 0 grade points    Classroom Grading Policy:   Participation 40%  Classwork Completion 30%  Assessments 20%   Homework 10% 

District Homework Policy​:  Homework should serve four purposes: to build fluency, foster application, provide spiral review  and offer opportunities for extension. In general, the purpose of homework is to apply what  students have learned in class, therefore new and unfamiliar skills and concepts should not be  required as homework in most classes. Homework counts for no more than 15% of the total  academic grade. (BP 6154)    Classroom Homework Policy: ​Homework will be given daily Monday­Thursday. All assignments  will be due the following day unless otherwise specified. 

District Attendance/Make­up work Policy​:  Students who miss work because of an excused absence shall be given the opportunity to  complete all assignments and tests that can be reasonably provided. Students shall receive full 

credit for work received within a reasonable amount of time. (CF 5113)  Students who miss school because of unexcused absences may be given the opportunity to make  up missed work for credit. Teachers shall assign make up work as necessary to ensure academic  progress, not as a punitive measure. Students who do not complete work shall be given the  lowest grade on the scale instead of a zero for non­performance.    Classroom Attendance/Make­up work Policy: All assignments missed due to student  absence may be made up and students will receive full credit for all such assignments.  

District/School Discipline Policy​:  While  on  campus,  students  will  follow  all  school  rules,  show  respect  for  all  adults,  fellow  students,  and  both  personal  and  school  property.  In  addition,  students  will  comply  with  the  established  guidelines  of  the  Monterey  Peninsula  Unified  School  District  student  dress  code.  A  progressive  discipline  process  is  followed.   As  students  continue  violating  school  rules,  consequences  for  student  actions  become  more  severe.  Classroom  suspension  and  possible  removal  from  school  will  result  when  students  engage  in  infractions  that  are  outlined  in  Education  Code  related  to  Progressive  Discipline  Grounds  For  Suspension  or  Expulsion  According to Education Code 48900​, ​(BP# 5144).  Classroom  Rules/Expectations  and  Consequences:  ​Marina  High  School  implements  the  Positive  Behavior  Intervention  Support  system  and  Time­to­Teach  model.  Students  in the ASD  Moderate  to  Severe  program  participate  in  social  skills  training  that  focus  on  positive behaviors  in  class,  on  campus  and  on  the  bus.  Consequences  of  behaviors  are  reinforced  throughout  the  day.  In  addition,  students  are  encouraged  to  self­monitor  their  own  behavior  and  are  given  opportunities  for  short  breaks  outside,  frequent  breaks  between  assignments,  opportunities  to  move  within  the  classroom  and  many   other  methods  which  are  individualized  to  meet  the  student’s needs.  I am available by phone or e­mail if you have any questions or concerns. 

Academic Honesty:​ Students need to prove to themselves that they can do successful work as a  result of their own efforts.  Cheating, lying, and/or plagiarizing could result in disciplinary  actions and/or implications that may impact the grade for the course. Causes for academic  dishonesty are complex and is best addressed by counseling and parental involvement. Teachers  will establish a classroom policy consistent with research­based best practices.    Classroom Policy: ​Students are expected to independently complete all independent  assignments by the due date outlined in the assignment. Students will be allowed to turn in any  and all missing assignments up until the end of each academic quarter for a score up to 90%.
