Debate Central: Civic Participation vs. Political Involvement by Marina Affo At a school like Lewiston High School, where many different types of people exist, there are bound to be many different views on politics and political involvement. When asked how they felt about political involvement verses civic participation, the students ts did not disappoint. Twel Twelve students wer were asked the following question: Which do you believe is more important,, being involved in politics and vote or is it is more important to do community service? Of the twelve people six of them stated that voting and being involved politically is more imp important than community service. Two of the twelve stated that vo volunteering was more important. Two of the twelve stated that both community service and being involved politically were equally important. One of the twelve stated that neither was important. Steven Patrie, a senior, believes that voting is more important than community service. He stated, that “You can actually have a say

in what the government may or may not do” through voting. Myheisha Tremble, e, a sophomore, also thinks that voting is the more important of the two to do. “You want your governor, or mayors, or president to help your community, not damage it. So it’s important for you to vote who you want.” Senior Chris Szustak believes that getting ge people involved in the local government is more effective than going out and volunteering for big volunteering organizations. “On the local level is where government is actually important.” Taylor Vaillancourt stated that voting “Is your right as an America citizen.” On the opposite end, senior Mary Turmel thinks volunteering is more important than voting and being involved in politics. Everybody knows what bullying is. Bullying is a form of aggr aggression that is intentionally directed towards people who are not big in the social world, or are different. There are different types of bullying. Some include: physical, verbal, and the bull bullying big one in our generation, cyber. The American Psychological Association says that” 3.7 million youths engage in bullying, 3.2 million are victims of moderate or serious bullying, and between

15 and 25 percent of US students are frequently bullied; 15 to 20 percent report that they bully others frequently.” People may not notice it, but teens all over the place are being hurt. We can put a stop to it at our school. Kids go home every day, scared to come back to school. We are not helping them. Their chances of living a good life and getting a good education is in danger. We need to help them not to be afraid.. We need to stop the bullying.

The Travel Club had been recently established at LHS. The club plans trips to various exciting destinations around the world which occur during dur school vacations. The man says:” I’m going home, too. I can’t work in the dark.” For many people in our generation generation, the news is really boring for many of us kids, but our lack of attention to what’s going on around us will bite us back eventually. In the months leading up to tthe elections, it is good that more people are talking about the presidential candidates; but there’s still too many kids who just don’t care. That is a problem. The reason for the news is so everyone knows what’s going on aaround the world, which is iincredibly important. If the local legislature egislature was trying to cut public funding to sports at the high school, wouldn’t the athletes be aangry? If more students watched or read the news, this could have

been found out months ahead head of time and the public would have stopped ped such a stupid decision. What if there was a law being passed to move the drivers license age from 16 to 18? Curfew at 8? You’d be ticked off, but too bad, you didn’t watch or read the news. In any issue, you’ll always find students rooting for a cause; Civil rights, gay rights, any of the recent wars, Occupy Wall Street, elections, us kids have quite an effect on any movement we support. Adults watched the news when they were kids, and you see clips of them back then standing in protest of Vietnam. They affected a cause they supported, they made a change, chang they had a voice, and we can too.

SATs can be a stressful event for juniors, seniors, and some underclassmen. Some of this stress is because students do not feel fe ready enough to take the SATs. So how can students feel more prepared? 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Testing preparation software and books. These types of study tools allow students to prepare at their own pace and they fit into their busy schedules. Software and books include practice ctice test tests and test-taking tips that can help. A preparation program or also a class. The best thing about taking classes is that students have a teacher or tutor that help students with difficult diff problems or concepts. Studying tudying in a class environment also helps to keep students concentrated, focused and on target. Take practice tests online. Free practice SAT test tests can be accessed on the College Board's website. The best things about online practice tests test are that they allow students to correct their work and show how the student is progressing in their test preparation. Keep a vocabulary notebook. Signing up for the SAT question of the day on collegeboard.com. These questions are free and sent to students by email. All A questions can also be saved and reviewed later on.

‘Lincoln’: An important movie that needs to be shown in history classes by Drew St. Pierre Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United ted States, is one of the most successful Presidents in U.S. history. He was the one who defended the Union during the Civil War and pro oposed the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution (abolishing slavery in the Southern states). tes). Lincoln had a lot of struggles dealing with the war, his family, and finding an end to slavery. Seeing a movie focusing on those three factors was nothing short of an experience and a history lesson. Director Steven Spielberg (‘Schindler’s List’, ‘Jaws’, ‘Mino ‘Minority Report’, ‘E.T.’, ‘Jurassic Park’, ‘War Horse’) did such a fantastic job capturing the realistic glimpse of politics and Lincoln’s (Daniel Day DayLewis) final months of presidency. ‘Lincoln’ proves why Steven Spielberg is one of the best filmmakers workingg today. Abraham Lincoln was tall (6’4”), intelligent, honest, and had a subtle, high-pitched voice.. That’s why Daniel Day Day-Lewis, who is perfectly cast for the role of Abraham Lincoln, totally hit this performance formance out of the park! There is so much proof that he’ll take home the Oscar in February for best actor. This his is literally, one of the most powerful performances that I’d ever seen.

Tommy Lee Jones is terrific as Thaddeaus Stevens, the Republican leader who followed d Lincoln to abolish slavery The cinematography, y, the costumes, and the look of the film are all first-rate. rate. John William’s score was also a delight to listen to. There are a lot of great speeches and lines that were funny, touching, and very moving. This movie should be shown in school, especially during history when students are learning about the Civil War and Abraham Lincoln. Overall Rating: 4/4 ‘Lincoln’ is rated PG-13 13 for an intense scene of war violence, some images of carnage and brief strong language..; 150 min.; starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, Joseph Gordon--Levitt, Tommy Lee Jones, David Strathairn, Gulliver McGrath, etc.; directed by Steven Spielberg.

The supporting cast is nothing short of terrific. rrific. Sally Fiel Field – who recently returned to acting in ‘The Amazing Spider Spider-Man’ – did great as Mary Todd Lincoln, Abraham Lincoln’s wife. She puts forth so much enthusiasm and emotion into her role. ‘Life of Pi’ is the new ‘Cast Away’, except it doesn’t star Tom Hanks or a volleyball with a bloody hand-print on it. By Drew St. Pierre 'Life of Pi', the latest movie from Ang Lee, is based on the book by Yann Martel. Despite never reading the book, I was excited for the movie. From the trailers, the movie did look beautiful. Ang Lee, the director of some really good movies that I have yet to see; like ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ and ‘Brokeback Mountain’ ‘Life of Pi’ follows Piscine Patel – or “Pi” i” for short ((Irrfan Khan) tells a story to a writer (Rafe Spall) who wanted to kn know his origins. Pi tells his story about how life was like being a teenag teenager (Suraj Sharma) who grew up in India, was introduced to religion as a child, and whose family owned a zoo. When his family decides to sell the zoo, they want to move everything to Canada by ship. When they ey become shi shipwreck Pi is the only one that survives. He ends up on a lifeboat with a zebra, a hyena, an orangutan, and a Bengal Tiger named Richard Parker. When three of the animals die, Pi and Richard Parker start having a connection with each other on the boat. The focus of the acting is the two actors who played the different versions of Pi. Newcomer Suraj Sharma plays Pi as a teenager, and he delivered a great performance. His innocence, religious beliefs, and emotions are all believable. Irrfan Khan also delivered a great performance playing Pi as an adult. Visually, ‘Life of Pi’ is one of the most colorful, imaginative and beautiful movies that I have ever experienced. The special effects were absolutely terrific. Ang Lee’s direction is simply terrific. It was well-shot shot and well well-

edited. The story of ‘Life of Pi’ is well-told told and interesting.

‘Life of Pi’ is a rich, pure and magical experience is one of the best movies of the year. Name: Danielle Bellegarde

Don Ferrara is our new assistant principal. He was introduced to faculty shortly before school ended and began his duties in midsummer.

Birthday: April 17th

Don grew up in Beachmont, a section of Revere, Massachusetts. His family moved to Maine when he was still a young man, and he graduated from Skowhegan Area High School. He attended the University of Maine at Farmington, where he earned degrees in History, Secondary Education, and School Administration. He is currently finishing a Master’s program in Educational Leadership.

Dani is involved in Cross Country Running, Indoor Track, and will try out for softball this spring!

Don began his career in education as a social studies teacher at Hall-Dale High School. He then served as Assistant Principal at Hall-Dale for six years. Hobbies include: bridge jumping, skiing, running, and hunting

She loves listening to music and is a very social person, which she finds makes it quite easy to make friends!

If you ever happen to strike up a conversation with Danielle, her favorite book is The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks!

What she likes the most about LHS is the independence and freedom she’s given as a student. Compared to the other school she attended, she finds there to be a lot less drama when you have the right friends!

Before entering education, Don had a career as a commercial plumber and then as an office manager for a construction company. He also worked as a Legislative Assistant in the 107th Congress for thenRepresentative Baldacci. Don is an avid sports fan—Red Sox, Bruins, and Patriots. He was a Dr. J fan, so the 76ers were his basketball team. In high school he was active in football, baseball, basketball, and wrestling. He still loves to engage in pick-up games. Don enjoys fishing of all sorts, and he and his wife bought a camp on Sabattus Lake this past summer. Don and his wife love to travel and have visited Italy, Sicily, Malta, Japan, Spain, Alaska, Hawaii, and even Africa! Other interests include ballroom dancing, for which the Ferraras have taken many lessons over the years. Don and his wife have four children ranging from 17 to 29. Don says “I always knew I wanted to be an educator. Like so many others I owe a great deal to those that helped me gain success and never gave up on me even when I gave up on myself. I have been given the gift of an opportunity to pay that forward, and it has been one of the most rewarding things in my life. Being able to make a difference in the community where I live makes it even better.”

After finishing high school, Danielle plans to attend a vocational school and work as a mechanic. Even as a freshman, she’s already on track to thinking about her future!

In Memoriam: Mildred E. Covell, 98, passed in November. Ms. Covell began teaching in Lewiston at Jordan Junior High School and finally at Lewiston High school. She became head of the home economics department and also taught in Lewiston Adult Ed. Her teaching career spanned 44 years. She was the first female president of the Lewiston Teachers’ Association and she was so very proud of her fight to achieve women teachers’ equal pay for chaperoning Lewiston High School dances. We appreciate her dedicated service to LHS.

New England Championship XC Meet

On Saturday, November 10th, runners from six states competed in the 78th New England Championship held at Twin Brook Recreation Park in Cumberland. The guys of the Lewiston Cross Country Team had qualified for New England’s with a runner-up place in Class A at the State Championships two weeks before, receiving a plaque and adding their accomplishment to the back of their jackets, along with Eastern Maine Regional and KVAC Champions. Despite the clear sky conditions, there was not a lack of mud on the course, especially in the last 100 meters to the finish line! The boys landed 24th place (2nd best team in Maine), with an average time of 18:20, beating Massabesic (the victors of the Class A State Championship). Although they were only 7 points away from Cape Elizabeth, they were still very pleased with the score, since they came in second without their fourth runner! "I'm so proud of how far they've come and they deserve every bit of it!" says Taylor B. of the girls’ team. The girls of the cross country team definitely have spirit! They came along to support the guys at New England's and at the State Championship's in Belfast a few weeks before. Not only were they cheering on the boys’ team at State's, but for Faith S., who individually qualified at Eastern Maine Regionals. The team says they're all like family to one another and could not be happier with their accomplishments this season. Disney brings its “A-Game” with “Wreck-it Ralph” by Drew St. Pierre Disney has made some really good animated movies, but they had never done a lot of movies that are as bright and original as “Wreckit Ralph”; the new animated film from Disney which revolves around Ralph (voiced by John C. Reilly), the villain in the “Fix-it Felix” arcade game, who decides to become a hero. Because he doesn’t like being a bad guy, he goes into some of the video games in order to learn what it’s like to become a good guy. He also befriends a character known as Vanellope von Schweetz (voiced by Sarah Silverman) from a candy-coated racing game called “Sugar Rush”. When Ralph accidently unleashes a threat in the arcade, he tries his best to save the day and become a true hero. I had extremely high expectations for this movie. I had the feeling that this will turn out to be an excellent animated film. I thought the premise to this sounded really cool and clever – a love letter to video games, and I really love the voice cast. So, did “Wreck-it Ralph” meet my expectations? Absolutely! This was such a fun animated movie for all ages, and better than Disney/PIXAR’s “Brave” (which was also was very good).

John C. Reilly delivered a strong performance as the title character, who wants to make a change in his life, achieve it, and become what he wants to be. That’s what a great movie character is about. Sarah Silverman provides most of the movie’s funny moments as one of the “Sugar Rush” characters who Ralph befriends, and is a “glitch” (a character who faults the game). She tries to get Ralph for help to become a racer once again. Jack McBrayer (from the hit-show, 30 Rock) has an amusing supporting role as Fix-it Felix, the main hero in the “Fix-it Felix” arcade game, who sets out to find Ralph and get him back to where he belongs. Jane Lynch does a great job playing the main character in a firstperson shooter game known as “Hero’s Duty”, who tries to find Ralph, alongside Felix.

The animation is simply wonderful; the bright colors, the set-ups, the environments, the characters all look fantastic. At times, the movie can be very gorgeous to look at. The characters in this were likeable and funny. It was awesome to see some video game characters making cameos (like Bowser, PacMan, Sonic, etc.) The story to the movie is well-thought out and genuinely clever. It’s always nice to see something new to the table. I really liked the themes to the movie: What does it mean to be a true hero? How can the main character’s goal become a success? And so forth. Generally, movies from Disney and/or PIXAR portray a lot of heart into their stories, which makes it very sweet. “Wreck-it Ralph” has enough heart to make it that way. From start to finish, this movie is a lot of fun, and when families bring their kids to see this movie, they’re going to fall in love with it. Rating: 4/4 “Wreck-it Ralph”; rated PG for some rude humor and mild action/violence; 108 minutes; starring John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jane Lynch, Jack McBrayer, Alan Tudyk; directed by Rich Moore
