Kevin Mathew CIS 3347 TCP/IP and Subnet Masking Professor Crowley TCP/IP and Subnet Masking 1. What is TCP/IP version 6? Updated version of TCP/IP version 4 that provides more addresses. 2. What version of TCP/IP will we focus on? TCP/IP version 4. 3. What does it mean when we say that TCP/IP is actually a protocol suite? This is made up of both TCP and IP protocols. It is both protocols tied together. IP controls routing info whereas TCP allows devices to communicate with each other. 4. What is a routable protocol? Routable protocols are used to divide networks into multiple sub networks. 5. What OSI layer does IP reside upon? Network Layer 6. What OSI layer does TCP reside upon? Transport Layer 7. In TCP/IP, what is windowing? The process by which the client computer sends information tot eh sever computer. 8. How many bits does an IP v4 address have? 32 bits. 9. In TCP/IP, what is the default gateway? The router for the subnet you are on. Allows you to connect computers outside of your subnet. 10. What does a Domain Name Server do? Maps domain names to IP addresses. 11. What is a Network Address Translation (NAT)? It translates a public IP address to a private IP address. This allows for private address on the internal network to map to an external public address. 12. In a TCP/IP address, what is an octet?

An octet is made up of 8 bits. Every IP address has 4 octets. 13. What is the purpose of a subnet mask? It’s a way to segment a network logically when on the same physical network, the subnet mask is what tells you what part of the IP address is for the network, and what part of the address is for. 14. What would the subnet mask be if you wanted to use 8 bits for the network address and 8 bits for subnets? 255.255.0.0 15. When was the last time that class full addressing was commonly used? 1992 16. What replaced class full addressing? CIDR.
