Women make up 48 percent of the total workforce, yet they hold just 24 percent of the jobs in science, technology, engineering, and math. Want to help us balance the equation? Join us from the AT&T headquarters for a digital event to learn how you can align your interests and strengths to find a fulfilling career in STEM. Participate in our live Q&A and ask one of our role models—Blanca Barrera, Director, Construction & Engineering from AT&T—how she was able to forge her own path. Don’t forget to grab some paper (sticky notes are great!) and a pen so you can take part in our activities. Can’t wait to see you then! If you’re interested in the STEM fields, join us LIVE on Dec. 11 for an event we're hosting with AT&T and road-tripper Regina from A Balanced Equation, our recent documentary about women in STEM. There'll be a live Q&A with Blanca Barrera, AT&T's director of construction and engineering, who'll be answering your questions on how to find fulfilling work in the STEM fields! So come curious, and get ready to start off your holidays with a fresh batch of inspiration. Shenita L. Chapman, Ed. S. Career Specialist River Bluff High School

What is EPL: Furman’s Emerging Public Leaders is a leadership and civic engagement program for high school students sponsored by the Richard W. Riley Institute of Government, Politics, and Public Leadership. This week-long summer program (June 17 – 22, 2017) offers a series of experiences that enable students to develop into civic-minded and engaged leaders in their communities. During the week, participants attend workshops at Furman that prepare them to plan and implement a service project addressing a specific need within their own communities. Students will then return to campus in the spring to present the results of their projects to their peers and a panel of judges. Additional project funds are awarded to the winner. “EPL has taught me that a leader should not be a source of empowerment, but rather should teach people how to empower themselves. I also learned how to listen and include everyone in the group.” – Ronak Malde, current senior at Southside High School, EPL Class of 2017 – 2018.
