Leica ScanStation Project Experiences Medicolegal Death Investigation Death scene investigators have deployed ScanStations at cold scenes going back 20-30 years to try and understand what happened. In New York City the Office of the Coroner/Medical Examiner regularly deploys the ScanStation for their important work and for mass casualty training incidents.
Mighty Mo's Last Journey The Battleship USS Missouri "Mighty Mo's" was decommissioned on March 31st, 1992. The battleship scans generated billions of data points that the team began processing into point clouds, CAD drawings, and 3D models immediately afterwards. The results of the entire documentation project will be used by the USS Missouri Memorial Association as a historical record and for ongoing maintenance and educational purposes.
3D Laser Scanning Boosts BIM
The surveying and mapping firm Woolpert was recently involved in a large BIM (Building Information Modelling) project that took advantage of Leica Geosystems laser scanners. These advances significantly improved the efficiency of applying 3D laser scanning for the creation of accurate, intelligent 3D models – the foundation of BIM.
Modelling the World’s Deepest Mine Owned by Anglo Gold Ashanti, Mponeng Mine is officially classified by The Guinness Book of Records as the world’s deepest mine. To highlight potential problem areas before the installation of a new conveyor, a monorail, and a chair-lift at the mine a survey was carried out to build an accurate as-built 3D model of the development.
Bullet Path Reconstruction The ability to quickly and accurately reconstruct the path of a bullet using Leica 3D laser scanning is one of the most powerful investigative tools available to a public safety agency. Not only can shooting reconstructionists combine traditional methods with laser scanning, but on certain kinds of scenes, impact site to impact site analysis would be either inaccurate or impossible without the use of laser scan data.
