Read the paragraph carefully and answer the following questions : That 'a library is a growing organism' has been amply demonstrated
since
Ranganathan formulated the 'law'. What to do about 'information explosion' h a s been a constant theme within documentation. The inherent tendency of each document collection towards cumulative growth is inescapable management problem. The expansion starts from the ever-growing mass of available documents and the everincreasing number of current potential users. No individual information service, if it is to be cost effective, can keep pace with these expansions . The system a s a whole can only cope with growth if it adopts a corollary principle, 'no library ( or other information service ) can stand alone'. This theme - cooperation, resource sharing, overall system development - is increasingly taken a s a central guide to action. Ranganathan's use of the term 'organism' was a healthy reminder that, though we strive to design, develop and operate information 'systems', they take lives of their own, changing continually under the influence of their external environment and their own internal dynamism.
