So​ ​far,​ ​students​ ​have​ ​been​ ​exposed​ ​to​ ​a​ ​range​ ​of​ ​different​ ​types​ ​of​ ​action people​ ​take,​ ​issues​ ​that​ ​have​ ​come​ ​up​ ​in​ ​their​ ​past​ ​inquiries,​ ​and​ ​primary resources​ ​that​ ​are​ ​located​ ​directly​ ​to​ ​their​ ​issue.​ ​They​ ​have​ ​been researching,​ ​interviewing,​ ​and​ ​contacting​ ​a​ ​range​ ​of​ ​different​ ​organisations and​ ​people​ ​that​ ​come​ ​help​ ​them​ ​to​ ​better​ ​understand​ ​their​ ​chosen​ ​issue. Over​ ​the​ ​term​ ​break,​ ​we​ ​recommend​ ​that​ ​our​ ​Year​ ​8​ ​students​ ​get​ ​out​ ​into the​ ​local​ ​community​ ​and​ ​begin​ ​to​ ​take​ ​action​ ​on​ ​their​ ​issue.​ ​This​ ​will​ ​give​ ​them​ ​plenty​ ​of​ ​time​ ​to​ ​reflect​ ​on how​ ​effective​ ​their​ ​action,​ ​and​ ​make​ ​any​ ​changes​ ​to​ ​this​ ​action​ ​before​ ​they​ ​share​ ​on​ ​the​ ​PYP​ ​Exhibition night. School​ ​News​ ​and​ ​Reminders Picking​ ​Up​ ​Students​ ​After​ ​School​ ​-​ ​A​ ​reminder​ ​please​ ​that​ ​the​ ​school​ ​Bus​ ​Bay​ ​is​ ​not​ ​available​ ​between 3.00pm​ ​and​ ​3.20pm​ ​to​ ​pick​ ​up​ ​students.​ ​Recently​ ​we​ ​have​ ​seen​ ​a​ ​rise​ ​in​ ​the​ ​number​ ​of​ ​parents​ ​who​ ​are

driving​ ​into​ ​our​ ​main​ ​entrance​ ​to​ ​pick​ ​up​ ​their​ ​children.​ ​We​ ​have​ ​three​ ​buses​ ​and​ ​hundreds​ ​of​ ​students who​ ​are​ ​using​ ​this​ ​area​ ​between​ ​3.00pm​ ​and​ ​3.20pm​ ​and​ ​it​ ​is​ ​a​ ​serious​ ​safety​ ​issue​ ​if​ ​we​ ​have​ ​parent cars​ ​also​ ​coming​ ​in​ ​to​ ​pick​ ​up​ ​students.​ ​We​ ​ask​ ​you​ ​please​ ​to​ ​organise​ ​to​ ​pick​ ​your​ ​child​ ​up​ ​from​ ​the Onewa​ ​Netball​ ​Courts​ ​or​ ​the​ ​carpark​ ​opposite​ ​this,​ ​or​ ​the​ ​surrounding​ ​streets. AIMS​ ​Sporting​ ​Tournament​ ​-​ ​It​ ​was​ ​a​ ​fantastic​ ​week​ ​of​ ​sporting​ ​competition​ ​for​ ​our​ ​Year​ ​7​ ​and​ ​8 students​ ​at​ ​the​ ​AIMS​ ​Games​ ​in​ ​Tauranga.​ ​Attending​ ​one​ ​of​ ​the​ ​biggest​ ​sporting​ ​events​ ​in​ ​the​ ​southern hemisphere,​ ​with​ ​10,139​ ​athletes​ ​from​ ​275​ ​schools​,​ ​competing​ ​in​ ​21​ ​sporting​ ​codes,​ ​the​ ​annual intermediate-aged​ ​games​ ​fielded​ ​their​ ​largest​ ​turnout​ ​ever.​ ​It​​ ​was​ ​a​ ​non-stop​ ​week​ ​of​ ​competition.​ ​A sizeable​ ​international​ ​contingent​ ​also​ ​added​ ​to​ ​the​ ​flavour​ ​of​ ​the​ ​tournament,​ ​including​ ​athletes​ ​from Australia,​ ​Tonga​ ​and​ ​the​ ​Cook​ ​Islands.​ ​TNIS​ ​entered​ ​teams​ ​in​ ​Basketball,​ ​Hockey​ ​and​ ​Waterpolo​ ​as​ ​well as​ ​entering​ ​students​ ​in​ ​individual​ ​codes​ ​for​ ​swimming,​ ​sailing​ ​and​ ​golf. Our school had excellent results, placing 14th out of 275 schools. Our sportspeople can be proud to have delivered a combined total of 14 Gold, Silver and Bronze medals – our most successful games to date! The first amazing result came early in the week when our sailors won so many individual gold, silver and bronze medals that our school was placed 1st - the Championship Yachting Cup was ours. The Girls Basketball team finished off the week on a similar note by also becoming Gold Medal Champions in a nail-biting final game against Northcross, winning by one point in the dying seconds, final score 29 - 28. Well done to all of the AIMS competitors for taking part, competing with dignity, treating your opponents and the officials with respect, and representing TNIS so very well. We are all very proud of you and we wish​ ​you​ ​all​ ​the​ ​best​ ​in​ ​your​ ​future​ ​athletic​ ​endeavours. Golf​ ​-​ ​Connor​ ​Knight​ ​-​ ​Connor​ ​participated​ ​in​ ​the​ ​Golf​ ​Competition​ ​at​ ​AIMS.​ ​The​ ​games​ ​were​ ​played​ ​at​ ​a variety​ ​of​ ​courses​ ​and​ ​it​ ​was​ ​a​ ​very​ ​competitive​ ​group​ ​of​ ​players.​ ​Connor​ ​was​ ​pleased​ ​with​ ​his​ ​placing​ ​of​ ​48th overall.​ ​His​ ​best​ ​round​ ​was​ ​a​ ​score​ ​of​ ​108. Bicycles​ ​at​ ​School​ ​-​ ​Following​ ​a​ ​spate​ ​of​ ​bicycle​ ​thefts​ ​earlier​ ​this​ ​year,​ ​the​ ​bike​ ​racks​ ​have​ ​been moved​ ​to​ ​a​ ​more​ ​secure​ ​area​ ​of​ ​the​ ​school.​ ​However,​ ​it​ ​is​ ​still​ ​important​ ​that​ ​all​ ​bikes​ ​are​ ​locked while​ ​they​ ​are​ ​at​ ​school.​ ​Today,​ ​for​ ​example,​ ​16​ ​of​ ​the​ ​42​ ​bikes​ ​at​ ​school​ ​were​ ​not​ ​locked.​ ​Please check​ ​that​ ​your​ ​child​ ​has​ ​a​ ​suitable​ ​bike​ ​lock​ ​and​ ​remind​ ​them​ ​to​ ​use​ ​it​ ​every​ ​day.​ ​The​ ​Police​ ​also recommend​ ​that​ ​parents​ ​have​ ​the​ ​serial​ ​number​ ​of​ ​their​ ​child’s​ ​bike​ ​recorded​ ​and​ ​kept​ ​in​ ​a​ ​safe place​ ​as​ ​this​ ​is​ ​the​ ​only​ ​way​ ​a​ ​bike​ ​can​ ​be​ ​identified. Weir​ ​Rosebowl​ ​Tournament​ ​Selection​ ​-​ ​Congratulations​ ​to​ ​Matthew​ ​Knight​ ​and​ ​Bennie​ ​Davis who​ ​have​ ​been​ ​selected​ ​to​ ​represent​ ​the​ ​Northern​ ​Football​ ​Federation​ ​at​ ​the​ ​prestigious​ ​2017​ ​Weir Rose​ ​Bowl​ ​Tournament​ ​at​ ​St​ ​Peter’s​ ​School,​ ​Cambridge​ ​from​ ​7-9​ ​October.​ ​The​ ​tournament​ ​for​ ​U12 Boys​ ​and​ ​Girls​ ​is​ ​an​ ​excellent​ ​development​ ​opportunity​ ​for​ ​players​ ​as​ ​they​ ​progress​ ​along​ ​the​ ​New Zealand​ ​football​ ​talent​ ​pathway.​ ​We​ ​are​ ​very​ ​proud​ ​of​ ​these​ ​two​ ​students’​ ​efforts. Lewis​ ​Eady​ ​Music​ ​Competition​ ​-​ ​On​ ​Saturday​ ​16​ ​September,​ ​the​ ​String​ ​Group​ ​participated​ ​in​ ​the​ ​Lewis Eady​ ​Music​ ​Competition.​ ​This​ ​competition​ ​is​ ​open​ ​to​ ​all​ ​school​ ​groups​ ​from​ ​Auckland.​ ​The​ ​group,​ ​which​ ​is lead​ ​and​ ​conducted​ ​by​ ​Christine​ ​Peak,​ ​have​ ​practised​ ​very​ ​hard​ ​to​ ​prepare​ ​their​ ​piece,​ ​‘Symphony​ ​No​ ​4 Finale’​ ​by​ ​William​ ​Boyce​ ​for​ ​performance.​ ​As​ ​Mrs​ ​Peak​ ​was​ ​recovering​ ​from​ ​surgery,​ ​Mr​ ​Mark​ ​Bennett stepped​ ​in​ ​as​ ​their​ ​conductor​ ​for​ ​this​ ​competition.​ ​The​ ​students​ ​performed​ ​very​ ​well​ ​gaining​ ​a​ ​Silver Award.​ ​The​ ​judges​ ​noted​ ​that​ ​the​ ​group​ ​performed​ ​the​ ​lively​ ​symphony​ ​very​ ​well​ ​with​ ​excellent​ ​dynamic contrasts​ ​and​ ​ended​ ​the​ ​piece​ ​beautifully​ ​with​ ​a​ ​well-timed​ ​final​ ​chord. APPA​ ​Speech​ ​Competition​ ​-​ ​Last​ ​week​ ​our​ ​school​ ​hosted​ ​the​ ​APPA​ ​Speech​ ​Competition.​ ​There​ ​were nine​ ​finalists​ ​representing​ ​the​ ​local​ ​intermediates.​ ​Representing​ ​our​ ​school,​ ​Maia​ ​Davidson​ ​delivered​ ​a great​ ​speech​ ​about​ ​Oceans.​ ​She​ ​impressed​ ​the​ ​judges​ ​with​ ​her​ ​excellent​ ​delivery​ ​of​ ​this​ ​well​ ​structured speech​ ​and​ ​was​ ​placed​ ​3rd​ ​overall. Foreign​ ​Language​ ​Competition​​ ​-​ ​Congratulations​ ​to​ ​Nancy​ ​Nan​ ​-​ ​1st​ ​place​ ​in​ ​the​ ​Mandarin​ ​Speech Competition​ ​and​ ​Dahye​ ​Kwon​ ​-​ ​2nd​ ​Place​ ​in​ ​the​ ​Korean​ ​Speech​ ​Competition.

Techstyle​ ​Results​ ​-​ ​Last​ ​Saturday​ ​was​ ​the​ ​2017​ ​Techstyles​ ​Fashion​ ​Competition.​ ​Students​ ​from​ ​TNIS have​ ​worked​ ​for​ ​months​ ​to​ ​create​ ​their​ ​amazing​ ​garments​ ​using​ ​entirely​ ​recycled​ ​or​ ​reused​ ​materials.​ ​The show​ ​was​ ​a​ ​huge​ ​success,​ ​with​ ​all​ ​designers​ ​and​ ​models​ ​taking​ ​great​ ​pride​ ​in​ ​the​ ​results​ ​of​ ​their​ ​hard work. Ceyda​ ​Sarikaya​ ​and​ ​Melisa​ ​Boz​ ​won​ ​the Streetwear​ ​category​ ​with​ ​their​ ​garment​ ​‘Habit’. The​ ​quartet​ ​performed​ ​for​ ​a​ ​recording​ ​of​ ​Mikayla​ ​Varcoe’s​ ​(Year​ ​13​ ​Diocesan​ ​School,​ ​Hamilton)​ ​song “Jack’s​ ​Song”,​ ​a​ ​finalist​ ​in​ ​the​ ​‘Play​ ​it​ ​Strange’​ ​Secondary​ ​Schools​ ​Songwriting​ ​Competition.​ ​‘Play​ ​it Strange’​ ​CEO​ ​and​ ​former​ ​Split​ ​Enz​ ​member​ ​Mike​ ​Chunn​ ​was​ ​there​ ​to​ ​oversee​ ​the​ ​recording​ ​and​ ​to​ ​also play​ ​bass​ ​on​ ​the​ ​song.
