I expected more from it than I got. It seems more useful as a WFA class syllabus and outline than as a text book for such a class. It certainly has serious limitations for someone who is looking for a self teach guide to WFA. As a pretty basic first aid book, it is not bad. However, it mentions more advanced topics, but rarely delves into those topics in any detail, certainly not enough for the book to be useful in a situation where you might need to use an advanced technique. That could well be by design though. As another reviewer suggested, better illustrations would enhance the book considerably. It is 2012 and there is no reason not to include actual photographs in the book instead of the mediocre quality sketches. A commenter wondered why recent middle east war experience was not used to update the book (such as the much earlier use of tourniquets that is now practiced). I wonder the same thing.11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. The Wilderness Medicine book of Choice! By Clifton C. Castleman If you've ever had the opportunity to meet Tod, you'll immediately realize that he really knows his stuff and is laid back & down to earth. That's the way this book is written - for the rest of us. It's easy to read, understand and comprehend the various ailments and injuries that are discussed in this book. The information provided also happens to follow the latest Wilderness Medical Society's National Practice Guidelines for Wilderness Emergency Care, which is why so many folks use it as a text book for Wilderness First Aid and Wilderness First Responder courses. Fantastic (and fun) read! Clif Castleman
Center for Wilderness Safety [...]18 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Fails to keep its promise By David D This book is not about wilderness medicine, or any kind of medicine. The title not withstanding, this is only a pretty good first aid manual. Readers with an interest in medicine will be frustrated by the simplistic and incomplete descriptions of diagnostic and treatment procedures that go little beyond what is taught in a typical first aid class. To keep this review brief, I will limit myself to two examples. On pages 267-268 the author presents information about gastroenteritis. He recommends Imodium for diarrhea and suggests that the reader examine the stool for blood and mucus. So far so good. However, he does not explain why this is important, how it should be treated differently, or the fact that Imodium can be dangerous when blood and mucus are present. Neither does he inform the reader about the dangers of this treatment if administered to children. The author goes on to recommend administration of oral electrolyte fluids, which is good adv. However, he neglects to explain how to make it (though it can be prepared with simple ingredients that might be available to a wilderness traveler). In almost all cases in which medical intervention would be required, all you will find is instructions to evacuate the patient and seek medical care. Well, yeah, but I do not need to buy a book to learn that sick people should receive medical care. I thought this book was going to cover that. Nope. I could go on, but I will keep my promise of brevity. Bottom line: if you are an outdoors person and want to brush up on first aid, this book is not bad. However, if you want to study wilderness medicine, look elsewhere. This book does not address that subject at all, in spite of having a title that promises that information.See all 26 customer reviews...
