She is the recipient of the Allied Arts Award, the New York Art Exchange Scholarship, and the Elizabeth Greenshields Fellowship. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK The Industrial Revolution between the 1790s and the 1860s had massive implications for culture and industry that impacted everyone living at the time. The transition from an agriculturally based economy to one dependent on manufacturing had implications on the daily lives of people from all classes. The invention of steam power lead to the introduction of the internal combustion engine and electrical power.
Emerging from the steamy glow of manufacturing and electricity were new intellectual ideas. Adam Smith introduced The Wealth of Nations arguing that a capitalist system would increase wealth and prosperity for all. Karl Marx saw capitalism as separating society into the wealthy class of bourgeoisie and the working class, he predicted that these would inevitably lead to socialism and the communist ideal. Wells was among many authors of the time who questioned the implications of the science of the Enlightenment.
