Decarbonising energy systems is a prerequisite for winning the fight against climate change. Fortunately, clean energy is no longer a mere niche-player, but an economic alternative to fossil fuels. And, the transformation of energy systems is gaining momentum around the world. However, while more and more countries deploy renewable technologies, systemic challenges for power systems require greater attention: Expansion and enhancement of the grid infrastructure, reform of regulatory frameworks and market structures, and the necessity to raise the financial means are fundamental challenges to governments and market participants all over the world. To support this transition process in South East & Eastern Asia (SEEA), Agora Energiewende and European Climate Foundation are exploring the case to help strengthen the policy and regulatory environment for clean energy; grow the community of experts and leaders in the field, support thought leadership, knowledge generation and technology exchange. To achieve this, we seek a

About ECF and Agora Energiewende The European Climate Foundation (ECF) was established in early 2008 as a major philanthropic initiative to help Europe foster the development of a low-carbon society and play an even stronger international leadership role to mitigate climate change. Most of ECF’s activities are focused on supporting civil society efforts to secure the decarbonisation of Europe. However, drawing from the European Climate Foundation’s direct experience of grant-making on energy efficiency, clean energy and transport in Europe, ECF’s International Energy Program helps secure healthy and climatefriendly energy around the world through addressing Europe’s energy footprint. We support civil society efforts to engage in decisions about energy choices around the world through technical assistance, specialist expertise on engaging clean energy choices and philanthropic investments. Agora Energiewende is a German think-tank and policy laboratory that develops scientifically based and politically feasible approaches for ensuring the success of the energy transition in Germany and beyond. Together with participants from public policy, civil society, business and academia, Agora helps to develop a common understanding of the transformation of energy systems, its challenges and courses of action. This we accomplish with a maximum of scientific expertise, oriented towards goals and solutions, and devoid of any ideological agenda. Against this background, we are lending our expertise, assistance and key learnings to partner organizations in other parts of the world to support their efforts in transforming energy systems, with a specific focus on the electricity sector. Agora Energiewende is a joint initiative of the Mercator Foundation and the European Climate Foundation.
