Fiji accuses Australia over visa Fiji’s military government has accused Australia of adding to tensions between the two nations by granting a travel visa to a former military officer. Lieutenant Colonel Ratu Tevita Mara escaped to Tonga last month after he was accused of treason and of trying to overthrow the military government. The government is led by Commodore Frank Bainimarama. Ratu Tevita has flown into Sydney and is expected to address a pro-democracy rally on Saturday. Fiji’s interim foreign minister, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola, says he is disappointed Australia issued the visa when it has travel sanctions in place against Fiji Ratu Tevita Mara is also expected to meet representatives of the Australian Government as he begins an international campaign against the military regime in Fiji.
