"Dust asymmetries in disks caused by gravitational perturbations" by Nicolás Cuello
Synopsis: It is commonly accepted that planets form in protoplanetary disks, which are made of gas and dust orbiting around young stars. Recent observations showed intriguing asymmetries and warps in the disk. These detections (HL Tau and HD142527 for example) triggered the current debate among theorists on what processes could create such features. In this talk, I will give a quick overview of dust dynamics and then present results obtained through numerical simulations using a bi-fluid (gas+dust) SPH code. I will mainly focus on the asymmetries caused in the dust distribution by embedded planets in the disk and by a single stellar flyby. The gravitational perturbations of these massive bodies strongly affect the dust distribution and dynamics, which has profound consequences for grain growth. Finally, I will attempt to connect these results to the future ALMA observations.
