MT is a course designed as an elective to take concurrently, in place of another elective, while enrolled in Math A/B. The purpose of MT is to support your student with the material presented in his/her regular math classes. Who enrolls in MT? Any Math A/B student who previously struggled to earn, or has difficulty maintaining, a grade that s/he wants. All enrolled students need to be motivated to improve. An MT student completes his/her homework each day, but may have difficulty with the concepts. Typically this student has been identified by his/her math teacher. There are usually no behavior issues to contend with in MT because every student is there to learn and wants to perform better. If there are behavior issues, that student may be asked to find another elective! What is done in MT? Your student’s grade will largely depend upon his/her homework completion in Math class, his/her completion and participation in MT class activities including his/her practice on the ALEX computer program. Although we will have daily warm ups, there will be no new homework assigned in MT. There will be a thorough review of the homework assigned in math classes, along with preparation for quizzes and tests. We will stay away from extra drill practice and explore the math topics through inquiries and discussions. Although there is no guarantee on success in regular math courses, most students will improve their number fluency and increase their mathematical confidence to continue being successful throughout high school and beyond.
